Brewery tour
Re: Brewery tour
Thanks Paddy and Cooky. That's given me some things to consider. I think I might try some simple water treatment to see if it improves things and revisit all of the part of the process where I think there is room for improvement.
Back on topic, Trelawny is a good pint but in my opinion not the best of the St. Austell ales. It used to be that St. Austell had Tinners as their weakest ale which dated back to when St. Austell's beers were not as good as they are today. Trelawny replaced it last year and I'm not sure if the recipe has changed much or whether it's just a rebranding.

I don't rate Trelawny either - it tastes a bit odd to me. I used to love Tinners, though. Try St A's Dartmoor Best: that's not a strong one (3.8-ish, I think) but I think it's much better than Trelawny.
Re: Brewery tour
I had Trelawny on hols this year. A great pint and session ale, but I do prefer Tribute myself
Re: Brewery tour
It's funny, it was the last good pint in the cask. Next pint they had to change the barrel, and the next one out of the new barrel was not as good. Just shows how conditioning is so important.
Re: Brewery tour
Lucky me!
I got a going home present....
I was served a pint of Betty Stoggs in a restaurant. It was supposed to be draught but was clearly bottled. I queried it with the waiter and he said the draught was cloudy. They had tried everything. After a few questions I had one anyway. Although it was showing some signs of oxidation it was clearly ok. It was confirmed that it was not at the end of the barrel and had been sat long enough. Lines were clear.
Having seen the cask filling at the brewery I surmised that the guy with the finings had accidentally missed one out. Ears pricked I fortunately had a water bottle in the missus' handbag so grabbed some to plate the yeast when home.
I may have to wash it with acid but it will be worth it.

Re: Brewery tour
Went to my local last night and Betty Stoggs is on the pull!
I ask the Landlord when he reckoned it will be finished, he said Sunday.
So he's giving me a phone and I'm going up to get some yeast out of the barrel!
What should I do with it ?
Wash it like I got it from the bottom of the FV?
Or feed it malt extract?
Cheers for any help!

Re: Brewery tour
Because of the finings I would streak a slant first before trying to step up. It won't be sterile though so you should ideally acid wash, or plate it and step up from one colony.
You can try with a little slurry though and step up and see how you go if you are not so particular about bacteria.

Thanks GxP, haven't a clue what 'streak a slant' is or how to wash with acid!
Re: Brewery tour
Its up to you, but if you wish to be adventurous in recovering yeast you should do these things. Or just buy yeast- It is the easiest way!

Re: Brewery tour
So, got my Betty Stoggs yeast from the cask, looks pretty good and looks like it may be just beer and yeast...
