East India Porter
Re: East India Porter
Hi Matt
All Grain favours the dark and mysterious porters and stouts - the complexity and flavour is unrivalled in anything i've yet to sample> So well done and I think I'll copy your recipe in tribute.

Thanks Otters. I can only take credit for putting it into Beersmith though. Barclay Perkins get the credit for creating it and Ron Pattinson for researching it and Seymour for sharing it.
If you do brew it come back and share your findings. I think I'd tweak it a bit next time for my own tastes and maybe add some wheat and a bit more crystal to give it a bit more body and sweetness. Delighted with this one though.

Re: East India Porter
Just been to my local HBS and will be starting a batch of this, with one slight tweak based on availability of ingredients, tomorrow afternoon. Sounds great to me.
Re: East India Porter
Let us know how you get on. I've not tried mine for a couple of weeks. I was very pleased with my choice of yeast. Burton Ale is great.
Re: East India Porter
Crack a bottle open *for research* Matt, I'd love to know if nearly a month in the bottle has helped it mature nicely!
Re: East India Porter
Going to visit some family tonight so taking some with me to see if my brother in law likes it.
Re: East India Porter
Wow... That is one tasty porter. I wouldn't say it was particularly East Indian but if you like Fullers London Porter then this tastes very similar.
Well done bro. You successfully made a porter with our soft water. Woooohooooooo
I think we can safely say my water is fine and SO4 was the culprit of all out sh1t beers

Re: East India Porter
SO4 is a scourge on humanity.
My taste was also positive. I think it done of the best we've brewed and wouldn't be out of place on a pub tap.

Re: East India Porter
Poured two part glasses of this (one for me and one for my father) and WOW, that is one tasty porter, amazing malty taste, and nothing like as bitter as i'd expect it to be. Roll on christmas day when this will be broached proper........

Hes not the first to 'discover' this...seymour wrote:You're missing the point. It's not India Pale Ale, it's India Porter, which was a real thing, and as Ron Pattinson discovered out-shipped IPA 6 to 1!TC2642 wrote:For me it looks like a good recipe but not an IPA, call me a malt fascist but I wouldn't agree with the crystal, brown or black malt additions.

Well, of course not, but the point remains. How about "re-discovered" then?alikocho wrote:Hes not the first to 'discover' this...seymour wrote:You're missing the point. It's not India Pale Ale, it's India Porter, which was a real thing, and as Ron Pattinson discovered out-shipped IPA 6 to 1!
Everyone knows all about India Pale Ale, almost no one has heard of India Porter. Or else they assume it's a modernized play-on-words. I love Ron's tireless efforts poring over actual English brewery logs in order to set the record straight. His is a huge service to the brewing community, and I insist these re-discovered facts ought to lead to some BJCP style guideline revisions (especially when it comes to English brown ale categories), if they want to remain credible.

Glad you're enjoying yours. I've not cracked a bottle for a few weeks as I was saving them for Christmas.Archie1978 wrote:Poured two part glasses of this (one for me and one for my father) and WOW, that is one tasty porter, amazing malty taste, and nothing like as bitter as i'd expect it to be. They will be taken into account in style guideline revisions. Trust me.I insist these re-discovered facts ought to lead to some BJCP style guideline revisions (especially when it comes to English brown ale categories), if they want to remain credible.
