Harbour ales use notty I think and are all samey :) on the bright side I was given one of their pilsners for free but again, I'm fairly certain they fermented with notty as it didn't taste like any pilsner I've ever had
I quite like skinners though getting back to the point. Especially Stoggs. Skin dog is right up there too.
Cheers and gone,

:)

In all my drinking years I've had loads of skinners. I agree that Rebel all taste weird. Their quality control guy came from St Austell. Maybe they sacked him? Perhaps there will be others who think Rebel are great. I don't think any of Harbour ales taste the same.

Happy Hosteller (sp?) is a good beer. You can only buy it in YHA's as far as I know.

I'd be very surprised if harbour used Notty. Be f@£king funny if he used sharps yeast

Had Skinners Porthleven when I was in Cornwall (amongst others), a real stand-out ale IMO, I'd put it above Betty Stogs.

Come on Lee,
Whilst I would agree that they all taste similar, dishwater they ain't. Our local stopped selling it, and put on Rebel instead. Now that's gone, ( thank god, it all tastes weird out of that brewery), they're getting Betty stoggs back in. Why? Because people like it! And most importantly, the regulars ( and me) complained.
Perhaps you've not had enough of it to aquire a liking for it. How's about harbour ales? Do they all taste the same? I bet they're similar.
It's the process and equipment that's the same, that's the key to cloning a beer.
Keg man, send me a PM, I can help with the Betty grain bill.
You're in Aggie aren't you? Which pub was that?

I agree about Rebel. There's something wrong about the beer they produce. To the point that my beers that go wrong tend to taste better than theirs.

My feelings about Skinners have changed a lot recently. Me and Lee did a blind taste test of a whole range of Cornish beers a couple years ago to decide what polypin to buy for Christmas and Betty Stoggs was a clear winner ahead of anything from St. Austell, Keltek, other Skinners, Wooden Hand and couple random ones. I did however go down to the brewery for an evening a few weeks ago and was really disappointed with everything I drank including Porthleven which I was previously quite a fan of.

I wonder what the clear winner now would be. Me thinks sharps spiced red, or St Austells big job

If course it would be Big Job but at the time it was mainstream beers that were mainly available as polypins.

I couldn't agree more. Porthleven is one of my fave skinners beers too. Did you have a pint of Lushingtons? It's their summer release that a few local pubs stock. It's a session portleven, about 4%.

Matt, Its the miners arms, in Mithian. I don't know why the rebel beers all taste a bit off, or odd. Perhaps its their yeast strain, or perhaps its a sanitary issue (can i get in trouble for suggesting that?)
But i know what you mean.
Its funny how beers change the way they taste from one year to the next, i reckon their recipes haven't really changed for years, and their process is definately the same. Perhaps its not the same season? I wont go near a pint of guiness in the summer, but winter warmer? Maybe.
I've got Lee's connectors in my van, next time i'm in Truro, ill drop them off.

Oh yeah, forgot to say that the Rebel Boys learned to brew by having a week brewing at Skinners. They even poached some staff. Mr Skinner has an open view about his process. The tour guides may not want to share it, but the boss doesnt care. His theory is that competition is a good thing.

I'd keep shtumm

I like the Rebel people but they are young and inexperienced. And if I remember rightly, they only have a 2.5 BBL kit and thrash it every day to meet demand. Can't comment on their beers particularly because I've not really tried them much but the ones I have were poor.

I don't like Skinners apart from perhaps the Knocker. The others all taste the same which isn't surprising since they are all the same but just a blend of their main brews to different extents. Skin dog is an alright lager.

Harbour, however, stand out for me because they try hard to be different. A bit too 'American' you could say, but Ryhs's double IPA is superb. Here is a pic of some of their conditioning tanks with Eddie (from Harbour) and Roger R (from St. Austell) in the way. They do have a lovely set up but after just a year already too small...

What's Roger up to hanging out at Harbour? It's good that all the breweries seem to get on. I did hear that Skinners don't get on with anyone but could he hearsay

I would guess no one gets on with Skinners as they are very aggressive on pricing and pretty much under cut every one in the South West, the old buy 4 casks a month and get a 5th free piss people off. Every one has a business model and i guess good luck to em.

I can see why Harbor brewing don't chase sales in the Southwest there is no point with the likes of skinners and others around.

The owner of Bath ales was telling me that St Austell are exactly the same. They offer huge cash incentives to rugby clubs etc to get their beer in there and others can't compete.
