Nearly 200g of hops in a 23 litre brew.
Be very interesting to see how this works out! How do you obtain your graphs plotting gravity? Do you use a refractometer to take the readings?

Knockout aroma during early ferment especially, pity I c0cked up the OG. The Notts is down to 1.010 now (4.7%ABV), Hophead's only 3.8%ABVyashicamat wrote:Nearly 200g of hops in a 23 litre brew.![]()

I've just brewed a hophead-esque beer myself with my little 2 gallon setup.
Used this recipe:
1650g Marris Otter
5g Cascade - 75mins - 10IBUs
37g Cascade - 5mins - 15IBUs
I have a US-05 flying starter beside me...
OG is 1036 - I was aiming for 1038, but I'm happy enough with that.

Have put this on now and it's got a pleasing cascade aroma and flavour. Slight greeness to the flavour, but only slight, just about mellowed out to clean/fresh tasting. Looking forward to it ages another 2 weeks and will definately brew again to a lower gravity. Quaffing 5%-ers isn't what I'm into, hitting the commercial brew's 3.8% should mean I'll be able to tone down that huge 5min addition without significant impact maybe try using just a whole 125g pack of cascade per 5G brew, and it'll mature quicker without having to wait so long for the flavour to mellow. Malt flavour is at a comparable level to the commercial brew and the use of just Nottingham yeast is something I'll stick with. Well pleased.

It's odd because beers like Roosters Yankee (which I'm fairly sure is cascades for the most part if not all) have a massive hop presence, but the flavour is smooth. My IPA is made with only cascades too (although in relatively conservative amounts for a big beer) and that doesn't have the harshness, but the Hopheadish I did recently was far far too astringent with the cascade flavour and had comparatively very little hops in it.SiHoltye wrote:![]()

The green hop bite/flavour isn't going anywhere. I've written my self a big note to stick to more 'traditional' late hops quantities. Having to drink this (admittedly early) cut with lemonade! It tastes like those huge American hop monsters I have in the past sampled at festivals, I didn't like the effect then. Live and learn - hopefully.
