Monk,
You're forgetting your mission. As a US member of the board who has tasted TTL (but surely have forgotten), you will need to bottle one of each and send them to me for comparison.':D'
Heck, why not send me a six pack of each in order to have a good set of samples for a controlled test.''

Have a great time brewing!

Hmm, let's see, surely shipping would be cheapr to Illinois than to MD, so feel free to send some my way!

Come to think of it, you're probably going to be too intimate with the beers to objectively critique. Should we all send you our addresses? In the interest of science of course.

Well...today's the day, finally! Neuro exam out of the way and I'm brewing the Tim Taylor. I decided to do 2 batches, this first without crystal malt, but allowing for about 110 minutes of boil. I think this will add some color and a little bit of carmelized sweetness. I mashed 10 lbs. of GP and got 8 gallons (US) with gravity ~1.030. My plan is to top up with water until I get my 1.043 OG. Boil is on now...wish me luck!

Piccies to come. 8)

And I think we all appreciate your dedication to being scientific to this brew and doing 2 versions, seems to be the day for multipul brews.

Well, my brew session was kind of confusing and messy, but I managed to make 5.5 US gallons of Tim Taylor Landlord-like beer. It is happily bubbling away in my fermentation freezer. Here are a few pics of the brewing process and my (very) humble setup:

Here's a shot of the mash tun. It's just a five-gallon cooler with a strip of stainless steel braid on the inside to act as a filter.

This is a closeup of the modification made to the spigot. Unscrew the spigot and jam a small stopper into the hole with a 3-inch copper tube in it.

I'm getting fat and the boil is on!

I was able to get 8 US gallons at about 1.030. Boiled it down for 2 hours to add some carmelization and to get it in the 5.5 gal range.

Well there you have it boys. I'll be racking it to a bright tank in about a week, methinks. Thanks for all of your help!

Really great pictures there Monk, that last one freaked me out a bit though - looks like you've only got two toes on your left foot !

Outanding work!
I take back most of the rotten things I have ever said about Cali! :=P
I particularly like the suspended hop bags.
Curious to see how this turns out particularly the caramelization process.

That looks like an interesting Cinco de Mayo party.
Hobbits are found of their ale I believe.

Nice photos monk 8)

I'm quite envious of your rubbermaid cooler - we can't get such things here, and if we can they cost an arm and a leg.

Nice to see a bit of the ancient art of jumping on a trampoline with a sombrero post-brew as well

Igloo sell something similar. You can get them from Recarda.co.uk . As you say - expensive. The 5 gallon yellow one is £36.99 and the 10 gallon £55.99. I think our US friends would freak out if they had to pay over $100 for a drinks cooler...
