Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
Over the past 3 months i've made 3 (25l) batches with NS beer from my own recipe (not unlike the recipe posted by the brewer) and i'm very impressed, they've made some of my best beers.
I think keeping it simple is the key and lets the hops shine.
The biggest difference to hop flavour i have found is not adding the last addition at flamout, wait for the 80c steep instead. For me this kept a lot more of the fresh NS flavour and next i'll give dry hopping a whirl.
Cheers Baz.

Brewing this today folks, I am skipping the Munich malt and upping the finishing hops slightly, and using the Rogue (Pacman) yeast. Also using pilsner malt.

The Brewers Recipe came out stunning! Highly recomeneded.

Goes to show how a simple straight forward recipe can turn out so nice... I ran out of NS and went with citra, n it was wonderful... Remember to pitch cold like the brewer said

Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
I have to say ... the recipe tastes just like Kipling (the one or two times i've had it). Mine is lighter cause i skipped the munich but the hops are bang on.
I dry hopped 5 gallons with Nelson and kegged 5 gallons.

Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
I deviated slightly, grain was as per the brewers %age But I went with 21 IBU @ 90mins, 17 IBU @ 15mins and 4 IBU@ 5mins plus
the steep, all Nelson. Yeast was WLP051
Then added 30g each of Simcoe and Columbus. plus 60g each of Nelson and Centenial to the fermenter (10gal) for the final 7 days
A great brew that easily stands comparison with draught and bottled kipling
Does anybody else get sweaty armpits (not literally) from Nelson/Kipling?

Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
I am planning on doing the brewers recipe tmw for my 4th brew. I have worked out the grain. I am a bit confused on the hops . I have NS hops with 12.3 AA. I worked out 17.4g gives me 27IBU for the start of boil addition. It then says 15IBUs , same size as first addition. I dont understand how to get this. Can someone help me out
I have 220g of ns hops and planned to add 50g at 80c

Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
Hi Fairbrew. I realise it's too late as you will have brewed already, but go with the IBU figures rather than the weights. When I brewed it, my hops were 12.7% alpha, so for a 25 litre batch my additions came out at 20.65g, 17.9g and 61.96g. I ended up using 21, 19 and 60 as I had 100g hops. When compared with draught Kipling bought locally, it was barely distinguishable from "the real thing". My partner preferred mine!
Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
What temperature did u ferment at? The pacman gives off lots of fusel alcohol when warm, needs to be low or mid 60f.mysterio wrote:I get a bit of turpentine... i'll look out for sweaty armpits
Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
I think around 15C. Turps smell was coming straight from the hops. I believe Terpenes are a component of the essential oil profile of hops.
Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
oh for a moment i thought u were saying turpentine... lol
Btw, did u have to pitch more due to the cold fermentation? How long did fermentation take to finish?

Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
I brewed this up 5 days ago, and it is pretty much through fermenting. I have tasted a sample and think I would like a little more Nelson punch, so am planning on dry hopping. I see a couple others have dry hopped this beer, how much Nelson are you using? Is the real thing dry hopped?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Thornbridge Kipling recipe????
I tried the recipe non DH and it was a lovely pint, but having DH other beers with nelson sauvin and liking the result, I finally DH it with an ounce of NS. IMO it makes for a better beer...
Just kettle hops made it a british pint with a twist in the hop aroma, but its a proper NZPA when its DH.
