Gillespies Recipe

Post by eskimobob » Fri May 19, 2006 6:09 pm

I'm wondering if anyone has or knows of a recipe for Gillespies Malt Stout. I had this years ago (around 1996) and really liked it however when I just tried to look it up, it seems that it is a dead beer :(

According to beermad.org.uk, it was brewed by Scottish Courage and is now dead.

If anyone can help with this I'd be grateful. I can't remember what I liked about it exactly but I do remember that it came a close second to Guinness IMHO :D :D

[Edit]
Apparently it is a Sweet Stout and these are defined as:
Dark brown to black in colour. Sweet stouts come in three main varieties - milk stout, oatmeal stout, and foreign stout. Milk stouts are made with the addition of lactose, and are sweet, low-alcohol brews. Oatmeal lends a smooth fullness of body to stouts, while foreign stouts are stronger (6.5-8% abv) and have a sweet malt profile and high esters. All of the sweet stouts are noted for their restrained roastiness in comparison with other stouts, and low hop levels.

I've struggled to find a recipe for this ale also :?
It looks like after S&N took over they decided that this was one stout too many
Makes me wonder, if they're not going to make it anymore then wny not make the recipe public :?
Or are they holding on to it for posterity

Hmmm - I have wondered about writing to them to ask whether they would release the recipe but have never got around to it. They would probably tell me to bog off anyway

If you do find a recipe for it let me know... please!

I lived on the stuff through the mid 90's, but yep - it is an ex beer, which is a loss.
