Hi BarnsleyBrewer,

There is a breakdown of the ingredients in Roger Protz's books The Real Ale Almanac. Don't know how accurate they are.
Hi Ian
Would it be in all editions of this book or a particular one? I’m looking to try a wards clone
Thanks
Neil

Bet we’ll never be able to recreate that distinctive sulphur smell that it had.
Was also a great laxative… :D

Maxim Brewery have the rights for Ward's Best Bitter.
In the back of my mind I seem to recall that while Maxim had those rights, initially they were unable to produce a decent beer using the original recipe, ingredients and yeast and were looking to find another who might care to take on that project. Now they produce the beer and advise it is done following a unique process.

It appears the yeast (Sheffield from Brewlabs) is the key player in the sulphur aroma and have heard that early fermentation should be controlled by starting from a lower than normal temperature and without full oxygenation. Thus it does appear that distinctive sulphur smell will be hard to recreate.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

Blimey I thought this was sarcastic.
Appears to be fact.
What other 'qualities' can be bestowed on commercial beer and still deemed saleable.

Fantastic, many thanks mate. I’ve just managed to get my hands on this via eBay. It looks like an interesting book.
Thanks for the pics too.

Having drunk many many pints of it (my first ever pint of beer in a pub wa Waaahhrds) I can confirm no sarcasm there. When kept well it was very tasty, when kept badly it was awful but even when kept well it smelled not great and a few too many pints in a night would get their own back with vengeance a few hours later.

Think it was around 4.5% if correct so it had a bit of oomph to it…
