Real Ale Almanac OLD HORIZONTAL

I know it's an old thread, but...Parp wrote:Anyone else got any recollections ?
I remember boozy college lunchtimes in the Hallcross pub in Doncaster where Old Horizontal was brewed... sat out at the back in summer watching the guys filling and rolling the barrels out, whilst we tucked into a Steak and Old Horizontal Pie and Chips... and a pint or three of OH, of course.
Sadly, it's now a theme pub and the brewery is long gone...

I'm currently putting the bits together to go AG, and am looking for interesting recipes. Old Horizontal was an old favourite, an I'm looking forward to brewing this one... dark, tasty, and moderately strong... but not too heavy.
Thanks for the recipe Norm!

This is a VERY old thread I know, but I wanted to reply anyway.
I remember drinking Old Horizontal in the John Bull in York - now sadly a car park. (I did stumble across a very nostalgic video on YouTube though, if you remember the John Bull: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22C6l5TATQU)
Anyway, I brewed the above recipe yesterday, with some slight changes:
OG 1.054
FG 1.015
ABV 5.2%
38 IBU
Batch size: 26 litres
Malt
5000g maris otter pale ale malt
155g chocolate malt
Hops
25g fuggles (5.6% alpha acid) at 60 min (19 IBU)
25g goldings (5.2 alpha acid) at 60 min (19 IBU)
Water treatment: none
Mash schedule: 66C for 60 min
3g irish moss
Colour: 16 lovibond (21 SRM, 41 EBC)
Yeast: Safale US-05, 1 sachet
Fermentation: ~1 week at 19C
This was tweaked from a previous brew a couple of years ago. You can read about the reasons for the changes I made in this blog post: http://cheshirepeaks.blogspot.co.uk/201 ... ontal.html

Re: Real Ale Almanac OLD HORIZONTAL
I remember this from the beer house ,angel st Manchester it was 88/89 and along with Brendan dobbin's Sierra Nevada pale ale and dobbins esb were my favorite ales would love to replicate these at home! It's why I got into brewing and growing hops , cascade in particular!
