Reverse engineering a kit

Post by booldawg » Wed Jun 25, 2008 4:40 pm

My very first brew was a Fixby Gold kit. As its coming up to my 1st anniversary in brewing I wouldn't mind doing a commemerative brew in honour of the mighty Fixby!

Not sure what hops to use but think a 1042 wort around 35 IBUs and 15-17 SRM wouldnt be far off.

What recipe would you put together?

15-17 SRM isn't very gold. I'd expect something 'gold' to be about 5-6 SRM

I'm not sure if the Gold in Fixby Gold refers to the colour. Below is a pic of the Fixby Gold I brewed, as you'll see its more of a nut brown!

I think the Gold refers to the hops used either first Gold or Brewers Gold? . . . . Just guessing there I'm not party to any inside information :(

Oh...OK. I was under the impression it was gold coloured.

It's described on the Brupaks website as a 'beautiful golden ale'.

I remember when I made it that it didn't seem at all golden, infact, I did wonder if the box had been incorrectly labelled & I'd got one of their other kits.

I made of few of these kits. Some were typically pale and others were as booldawgs picture.
There was also a definate taste difference between the 2 coloured kits, the lighter being my favourite
