I want to make beer from scratch

Post by silkyuk9 » Wed Jul 16, 2008 10:09 pm

ok, im quite decent at making beer from a tin kit. Its now time to make a beer from scratch.

All i want to know is a basic recipe for 50 pints of beer/ale or bitter.

im guessing i need some hops. This im hoping comes in a bag from the local homebrew shop.

my questions are.

for 50 pints of beer.

how much hops will i need, and how much sugar.

thanks

If you want to go from scratch, you'll need grain (as opposed to sugar), hops, yeast and water. You need to "mash" the grain to turn the starch into sugar, then boil that with the hops, cool it down, and the yeast, ferment, wait and drink.

You could do a lot worse than buy a grain & hops kit from Paul at BarleyBottom

Maybe also search YouTube for videos on "all-grain brewing" - there's some pretty good ones there.

Good luck!

i see, i thought i just boil up the hops add the sugar and yeat and bingo.

so, i need a little more help.

i obviously need something to add to water and sugar and yeast to creat my beer.

yes im a little wet behind the ears on the making from scratch, but if i had a list of ingreidiants that i would require from a shop then i could give it a go.

so if you could provide me with this info i can get to the shop and get the stuff. i want to make 50 pints so any help would be appreciated.
