AG#045 - Best Bitter (1909) Morell's Brewery, Oxford

Hello,

I've scaled up recipe 3 in Durden Park's Old British Beers book, and plan to brew on New Year's Day. The recipe is simple enough for a 'morning after the night before'. This takes 3-4 months to mature, 88BU's  Should be good.

Ingredients
23L@85% efficiency, 90min mash @ 67°C, 90min boil
Amount Item Type % or IBU
5.00 kg Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (5.0 EBC) Grain 100.00 %
225.00 gm Fuggles [4.50 %] (90 min) Hops 88.4 IBU
1 Pkgs Dry English Ale (White Labs #WLP007) Yeast-Ale

Beer Profile
Est Original Gravity: 1.055 SG
Est Final Gravity: 1.013 SG
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 5.48 %
Bitterness: 88.4 IBU Calories: 90 cal/l
Est Color: 8.4 EBC

That looks tasty and simple!

Just the 90 minute hops?

Yeah, that's what you do???

Have thought more about this the yeast I have ready (WLP007) attenuates to about 80%, this may be higher than the figure at Morell's Brewery 1909, who I'm guessing didn't use a Burton style yeast. Consequently when I brew this one I'll use a mid range english ale yeast like S04. Seeing as I've grown on this WLP007 it feels sensible to put it in a wort that matches it's quintessential past usage. An IPA, so brewday plans changed...again

AG#45...sounds good...wasn't the Burton IPA supposed to be AG#45, or are you doing both?

I've not used WLP007 before, and also do want another historic beer, so I thought I'd go with the IPA. Don't want to tie up more than one keg with lengthy maturers back to back. So will save the Morells for another day. Thanks for the advice all.

Thanks for posting this recipe! I had been undecided what to brew today, then I saw this recipe. I decided it would be my New Years brew. I had to modify it though as I am out of Fuggles. I subbed EKG for the Fuggles is all, and I am using a slurry of White Labs WL-026 Premium Bitter yeast in it.
Thanks and Happy New Year!!!!

The yeast strain chart on Mr Malty has WLP007 down as the Whitbread dry strain - isn't this the same as S04 or am I mistaken...?

Sounds like a good recipe too - shame the Morrells Brewery is now a large development of luxury flats :(
