Hey guys,
I have put together my own all grain setup and want to brew a nice session beer for my first beer. I got this recipe from Geoff on the old forum.
3.70kg golden promise
12g Aurora @ 75min
12g Fuggles @ 75min
15g Styrian Goldings @ 15min
15g Williamette @ 15min
15g fuggles @ 0min
15g East Kent Goldings @ 0min
does this look close or do you have any other recipes. Is this a good/easy first brew?

Generally it's added about half way through the boil, but AFAIK it shouldn't make too much difference - although I'm sure someone will come along with a reason for why this is important
Incidently, it is best to disolve the sugar in a little hot water before adding to the boil so it doesn't sink to the bottom - although I guess if you're using corn sugar this may be less of an issue as it should disolve pretty easily.

Glad you're trying the recipe. I haven't brewed it yet because I can't really afford all the hops especially when I've got lots of bits and pieces of old hops in my freezer. That's the only reason I wouldn't recommend doing it as a first brew, using 5 different hops if you don't know their properties isn't very 'educational'.
I had a pint of Deuchars a few days ago to remind myself what it tastes like and it's really not bitter at all, and not very dry either. For these reasons I would skip the glucose altogether, and mash at around 65/66C and shoot for an FG of somewhere around 1.010. I still think the fairly low (~25IBUs) is about right, with emphasis on the hop flavour rather than bitterness. Good luck with it and let us know how it turns out!
Have you sampled yours yet BT or is it a bit soon?

... sorry to barge in here, and sorry if this is a bit obvious, but you'd have to increase the amount of pale malt if you were to exlude the sugar. For what it's worth I think this is a good idea. I'd assume an efficiency of about 70% on your first brew... I don't know what others think.. MD, let us know if you'd need a hand working out the amount of pale malt needed.mysterio wrote: For these reasons I would skip the glucose altogether, and mash at around 65/66C and shoot for an FG of somewhere around 1.010.
If you are going to use a dried yeast I'd suggest safale 04, as I've found to not ferment down too low, or leave too much residual sweetness.
Just a suggestion.

Actually, thinking about it this is quite a good recipe for a first all-grain. It is modestly bitter, so if your efficiency is a bit low and you end up with a bit less beer than expected, it won't be too hoppy - on the other hand lots of late hops = plenty flavour.
All this talk of Deuchars is making me thirsty
