Woke up inspired

Post by boingy » Sat Feb 07, 2009 10:47 am

Woke up inspired so decided to brew a Summer Lightning variant.

Pale MO: 5kg
Boudicea hops: "about a packet"
US-05 yeast

Got the Boudicea from Barley Bottom and this will be the first time I have used them. Don't know much about them other than they are a Challenger-type so should be fun finding out. Currently about halfway through the mash.

Me too! I woke up and decided to do my first 'lager' since my laundry is at 12c I figured i could ferement it there. 9kg malt lager malt for an end batch of 40 litres at 1050. Hersbrucker 2oz at 60, 1 oz at 30 and 1 oz at 10. Put my back out again lifting 34 litres of mash plus the grain and keg. Need to build a stand....

Well, I either was either hugely more efficient than usual or, much more likely, I screwed up the malt quantities.

Target OG was 1049. The SG into the boiler was way higher than I expected so whilst the boil was going I stuffed some numbers into ProMash and could not quite believe the resulting numbers. It reckoned I was heading for an OG of 1061. My efficiency is normally about 70 to 75%. This OG would need an efficiency of 90%, not very likely given that I batch sparge and that I am not very precise. So.... my best bet is that I stupidly used 6kg of malt instead of 5kg. My scales will only weigh 1.5 kg at a time so I guess I may have lost count of the kilos. How hard can it be to count to 5 (or 6)?

Anyway, remedial action required. I boosted the boil volume by 4 litres and gave the boil an extra 20 minutes to boost the bittering, ending up with 5.5 gallons and an OG of 1054. Not perfect but my FV will not cope the extra few litres needed to get back to the expected OG. The IBU is a tad lower than I planned but I had planned on the high side anyway so I'm pretty sure it will all work out. Wort tastes great and the colour is perfect.

The little yeastie beasties are just starting to show signs of action.

Ahh don't worry about the quantities - you'll taste the differences however that difference you'll relate to next time around.

Better to regret something you've done rather than something you've not done! After all it's the best way to understand the ingredients you're using..

Look forward to your results :D

That's pretty close to Nethergate's Essex Border Ale. Just missing a little torrified wheat. I had a taste of cooldad's version of this and it was a nice drop of beer. Hope yours turns out as good.

Heheh. And, inevitably, today we have the side effect of my miscalculation and of an over-filled FV. The yeastie beasties have escaped, propelled on a vesuvius of foam. Naughty yeastie beasties. [-X

Fortunately, the FV is standing on an old plastic tray designed for just such a situation. That's experience, that is....
