Since tasting Cains raisin beer i thought i'd put the raisin slant in my next bitter brew which is an extract beer but have no recipes anybody got any ideas :?:
also when would you put the rasins in ,during the boil,in the fementer and do you put them in whole ,crushed or make wort first and use this also how much for a 4 gall brew:?: :?:

Since using 'mixed dried fruit' in one of my beers, I am loathe to use any type of dried fruit again. Obviously this would include raisins.

IIRC Special B is supposed to impart a raisin flavour. You may want to look down that route instead.

FWIW, I believe that the fruit was responsible for ruining my beer.

Did you boil the fruit to make sure there was no nasties in them?as this could spoil the beer or was the taste just cr*p.I'm thinking of crushing them after giving them a boil in some wort then adding to fermenter. :?
Quite suprised no takers apart from you on this POP

I've tried adding raisins in the last 5 minutes of the boil to a Belgian Dubbel style beer. To be honest it wasn't worth the effort. As PoP said, you could probably get a decent raisin effect using speciality malts

Finding info on this is hard looks like you need a shed load of fruit to get any sort of flavour, but found a site that says adding fruit to the secondary might be the answer obviously the fruit would have to be sterile. :?

I added 500g to the boil
I added another 500g (which had spent a week being soaked in bourbon) to secondary

The beer never cleared and I think tastes worse now than when it did originally.

I think I have about 6 bottles left (it wasn't SO bad I had to throw it away!) I did give a couple of bottles to Oxford Brewer (having prewarned him how bad it was!)

4 of the 6 bottles are in my 'beer archive' The other 2 are lurking in the shed. I'll probably drink them this weekend just to be rid (although archived stuff stays until I have a full 40 pints and then I'll have a beer night with a group of mates :) )
