Which Stout for AG 3??
Which Stout for AG 3??
OK after the success of my Tim Taylor Landlord and 49er clones I fancy doing a stout. Probably either a guinness clone or perhaps Garth's 4 shades recipe which seems to get a good review. I do like Guinness (I know Chris gives it a bad rap) but I wouldn't mind a fuller flavoured stout. Any reccomendations or recipes I could try? I want to make the order from H&G soon to brew this weekend.

I'd go with the 4 Shades, it's a belter, or if you're wanting a bit more wack what about Pop's Stout, a full flavoured stout with a large body, it's a bit of a kitchen sink brew, ie everything's in there but it works very well. I've made this three times now.

Re: Which Stout for AG 3??
Thanks all for your suggestions, quite like the look of the Titan stout, MightyMouth, but I can't resist the 4 shades! I have ordered the ingredients. Any tips Garth? Will SO4 be OK instead of nottingham as I forgot to add Nottingham to my order?
Re: Which Stout for AG 3??
Try it another time, I dont think you will be disappointed. As far as yeast goes I would use S04 myself anyway as nottingham is a bit bland IMO.
Re: Which Stout for AG 3??
Yeah, agreed S-04 is fine for stouts, leaves a little sweetness, more than Nottingham would

I love the look of this one - http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/news/newslette ... n_2007.htm - I just haven't got around to making it yet!

Re: Which Stout for AG 3??
I've made that two or three times now and it's a cracker, the smell when you dump the treacle in the boil is amazing. It's also a very smooth drink with that treacley kick right at the end.Redbloke wrote:I love the look of this one - http://jimsbeerkit.co.uk/news/newslette ... n_2007.htm - I just haven't got around to making it yet!

How did you portion out the hops for that one?
