Which Stout for AG 3??

Post by jdt199 » Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:59 pm

OK after the success of my Tim Taylor Landlord and 49er clones I fancy doing a stout. Probably either a guinness clone or perhaps Garth's 4 shades recipe which seems to get a good review. I do like Guinness (I know Chris gives it a bad rap) but I wouldn't mind a fuller flavoured stout. Any reccomendations or recipes I could try? I want to make the order from H&G soon to brew this weekend.

You could try my Titan Stout, I don't think anyone else has done it so I would be interested to see what someone else thinks of it.

I'd go with the 4 Shades, it's a belter, or if you're wanting a bit more wack what about Pop's Stout, a full flavoured stout with a large body, it's a bit of a kitchen sink brew, ie everything's in there but it works very well. I've made this three times now.

Try Vossy's oatmeal stout, cracking beer.

Thanks all for your suggestions, quite like the look of the Titan stout, MightyMouth, but I can't resist the 4 shades! I have ordered the ingredients. Any tips Garth? Will SO4 be OK instead of nottingham as I forgot to add Nottingham to my order?

Try it another time, I dont think you will be disappointed. As far as yeast goes I would use S04 myself anyway as nottingham is a bit bland IMO.

Yeah, agreed S-04 is fine for stouts, leaves a little sweetness, more than Nottingham would

I've made that two or three times now and it's a cracker, the smell when you dump the treacle in the boil is amazing. It's also a very smooth drink with that treacley kick right at the end.

Garth,
How did you portion out the hops for that one?
