SNPA clone?

Post by DarloDave » Sun Mar 08, 2009 5:18 pm

Getting my loan in a few weeks which means I can start brewing again (hurrah!). A clone of this beer is top of my list. Anybody got a good tried and tested recipe?

Cheers! Have you made this before? How close to the original is it?

I keep meaning to do this one. This is the recipe I will be using as it came from the head brewer at SN

I post over there a lot so I'll save you the read through that entire thread -- it's 30 pages :!: The recipe posted on the first page will get you very close. There was a lot of discussion about dry hopping. SN doesn't but lots of people posting there have and like the aroma they get.

Cheers. Might use s-05, as ive never used a liquid yeast..although according to H&G WLP001 can be pitched without making a starter, so may use this..whats the difference? (except about a fiver!)

Our friends in the US who live near the manufacturer can pitch a tube of white labs into 5 US gallons of a 1.040 beer. If you tried that here I can almost guarantee you'd get a long lag time, sluggish ferment and potentially high FG sadly. You really need to make a starter!

US-05 is basically the same stuff, I don't notice any difference between that and the liquid version, apart from a tad higher attenuation.

I do a recipe similar to the one posted in this thread, I think I used lower colour MO as the base

This is one I brewed a couple of times last year.
It might not be an exact clone of SNPA, but it is in the same style.
Beautiful drinking, and after a couple of months the Cascade hops really shine through.
I like this one so much, it's turned into my house brew, and one I do now once for every 4 or so brews.

If it was me i would just bitter with cascades, IMO SNPA is all about the cascades and perle (perle not so much) the magnum is there for smooth economical bittering, but i see no reason why you couldn't do the bittering with cascades.
