Easy Rider

Post by softlad » Sun Apr 05, 2009 12:38 pm

I popped out for a pie and a pint last night and had a pint of Kellham Islands Easy Rider.

It appears to be an all pale malt PA and is quite dry with a good floral aroma.

I'm looking to brew something along those lines for summer afternoon refreshment but am undecided on the hops and yeast. I want it to have a dry finish and from my limited experience of yeasts was thinking about Nottingham (stop yawning !) but am open to suggestions on this.

I think I'll be using Styrians for the aroma hops but was wondering what would be a good partner for the bittering hops (or maybe use all one hop variety ?)

Any thoughts on recipes or yeast/hop suggestions welcome

I can be of help here - Roger Protz's '300 Beers to drink before you die' lists this as:

" Both versions are brewed with Maris Otter Pale malt and a touch of wheat malt. The only hop is the american Willamette.'
TBH you can tell it's a simple single hop beer. It's very nice. Pale Rider is avaiable in bottled form but it's not as good as the draught version, although I suspect that's more to do with bottling itself.

For what it's worth, my standard Pale Ale (Maris Otter and Goldings at 90, 60 and steep) is not a million miles away from it. That's the beauty of Pales - simply change the hop and you've got a different beer. My favorite style, for sure.

good luck. cracking beer. you should try thier smoked porter if you get a chance. AWESOME.

I brewed something remarkably similar on Saturday and I am fermenting with Nottingham for a dry finish with no yeast character to obscure the Aurora hops I used. I brewed mine lightly bittered to about 27 EBU as it's for mass consumption not just my own. A good steep at 80c as well to bring plenty of hop flavour into it.
Planning - Not for a long while

Fermenting - I'm Done

Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA

Drinking - Still...Whiskey

Thanks chaps

I dont have willamette in but have plenty of others.

My more recent beers have been mainly MO with around 200g crystal for a 5 gal brew. I have a MO / torrified wheat beer boiling away right now. Will play about with mainly paler beers over the summer months.

And the smoked porter sounds interesting. I can feel a long overdue return to the Fat Cat in Sheffield coming on  .

I can recommend the smoked porter - tried it at the Rotherham beer festival! Get yourself to the fat cat and give it a go - highly recommended!
