I want to try some making nettle beer and wondred if anyone has a good recipe. I know there is a river cottage recipe but wondered if anyne has tried alternates. Also has anyone managed to brew carrying a green colour through to the end. I reember there is an ale I drank in the pub that is green and wanted to get something similar.
Thanks

hahah that reminds me when i was 15- Being underage and in need of booze i made up some ghetto booze using sugar water and bread yeast after some aging actually tasted not too bad a bit like a cheaper white wine. Now after this sucess my friend says he wants me to help him make some. So we look round for containers and find a 45 litre camping water container so we fill it with water and sugar and yeast and put green food colouring in. And as an airlock a green minty condom.... Needless to say i got a text the next day from my friend to say that the whole thing went boom spraying green stuff all up his white walls... Well needless to say he dad wasnt impressed and to this day his carpet is still stained...

Borodave might not be far off the money as I think the Ale you're talking about has green food colouring in it.
Planning - Not for a long while
Fermenting - I'm Done
Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA
Drinking - Still...Whiskey

The green beer is this stuff :- http://www.stonehengeales.co.uk/sign_of_spring.html I've had it myself before, nice pint. It's just green food colouring, the head brewer there told me when I emailed them about it.swheatbeer wrote:I want to try some making nettle beer and wondred if anyone has a good recipe. Re: nettle beer
This is what I got when I went to a talk on making wild beer - you can change the nettles for anything you like e.g. dandelions, rosemary, whatever... just boil it up and add yeast!
12L water
approx 60g (2 oz) dried nettle leaves (approx 1-2 carrier bags wet)
14g hops
boil together in 4L water for 1/2 hour
add water to 12L
add jar of LME (1.5kg malt extract)
stir
leave to cool
add yeast
cover...wait
put in glass bottles with a teaspoon of sugar
pretty basic, just nettle flavoured ale - tasted lovely though.
you could remove the hops...
