Tomorrow's recipe. Any comments?

Post by Mauri » Mon May 25, 2009 8:41 pm

I was planning a completely different brew for tomorrow morning, but a yeast emergency meant I had to switch to dry yeast. So I decided to change my plans completely and I put together this recipe:

Pale Malt 5000 grams
Wheat Malt 250 grams
Crystal Malt 100 grams
OG 1.052 (I just switched to a false bottom mash tun so I'm not sure what efficiency I'm going to get, this estimate is based on the previous 74% efficiency)

Hops
Bravo 13.5 % 90 mins 25 grams
Glacier 5.4 % 15 mins 15 grams
Cascade 6 % 15 mins 10 grams
Glacier 5.4 % 15 grams at 80C
Cascade 6 % 10 grams at 80C
total EBU 43

Nottingham yeast

Does it sound ok as an APA? anything you would change? Any comments or advice is welcome.
Cheers
Mauri

I use a false bottom mash tun and mash for 90 mins. I get between 80-86% efficiency (depending on temp).

I was hoping that the switch from mash and sparge bad to false bottom mash tun was going to increase my efficiency, but it looks like I have 74% again. Admittedly a couple of things went wrong, with the first batch sparge running too slow (pretty much stuck) and the second batch done with water that, by then, was not hot enough, so I can't complain really. I will change a couple of things in my setup (the plate in particular), to try and avoid these issues next time around, and hopefully increase efficiency as well.
The wort smells and taste yum. I think I may dry hop with 15g of cascade or a mix glacier/cascade before bottling.

Just brewed today and plan to dry hop with 34g of Cascade. Will use 100g of Cascade altogether in this current brew. :D
