Recipe - tastes a little like wheat beer

Post by towser » Mon Jun 22, 2009 5:57 pm

I did an own recipe that has turned out very pottable but surprisingly with an almost wheat beer flavour. It's very clear in the glass (after just 10 days bottle conditioning) loads of foamy head and overall very pleasant. I'm not sure why it turned out with a wheat beer taste though:

50/50 Pale Malt and Pilsner Malt
400gms Torrified Wheat (less than 10%)

I used Challenger Hops at the start of the boil and Styrians for Aroma (15 mins on the boil the also right at the end of the boil as I switched the heating off). Altogether around 30EBC.
I'd put the exact recipe on, but I'm working abroad and don't have access to the hard-drive.

For yeast, I used Safale UK(US)-O5.

Initially, I got the swamp water you'd expect from the Safale UK(US)-05, but it cleared beautifully in the bottle after just a few days.
But it is the taste that has me intrigued. I was expecting a summer ale, fruity on the nose with the Styrians in there, not a wheat style beer. I'm intrigued, as it's an accident that turned out well, but still an accident.
