I've just got GWs book, and before I brew a recipe thought I should try the original. Most of these beers aren't available in Australia but I managed to get a bottle of Old Thumper - it was delicious, so lets go. Now the problem starts.
Recipe in book calls for pale malt, crystal malt, choc malt, torrified wheat, challenger hops and EKG.
The label says: "Ingredients: Avon Valley water, malted barley, hops, yeast" and "It is brewed with floor malted maris otter barley, and goldings, progress and fuggles hops." No mention of wheat here, and hops are different.
So I'm sure the recipe in the book will produce an excellent beer, but its not going to be same as what i drank last night. Does anyone have another old thumper recipe?

Is that for 23L Chris?Chris-x1 wrote:As far as I know Ringwood often add a small amount of torrfied wheat to their beers and its in such small quantities it wont make any significant difference to the taste.
Recipes are frequently adjusted and changed for various reasons and it sounds like the lable is listing an old recipe or the recipe was briefly changed for reasons of availability when BYO was written.
Here's an old recipe for Ringwood best which can be scaled up to produce a higher gravity beer using the information in BYO for gravity and IBUs
