4 Shades of Stout
4 Shades of Stout
I made this a few weeks ago and am now on my second pint. I have to say that despite the odd use of cascade hops it is a FANTASTIC pint! Thoroughly recommend it. Subsonic.

oh ye of little faith......

Re: 4 Shades of Stout
I'm getting ready to brew a second batch.
Cascade did sound strange but it works really well.
I was considering changing the hops but think I'll stick to the same recipe

Re: 4 Shades of Stout
Been looking at this recipe and wondering how much Cascade comes through after a 90 min boil? Can you taste it or would any bittering hop do?

It is a lovely pint isn't it. I'm going to do some more soon as well.....
As for the Cascade, I also added some at 15 mins and it still worked well.....but if you're only going to do a 90 minute addition, I'd imagine almost any hop would work.

I wondered this before I did it, but it is still there after 90mins, and you can tell it's Cascade, and it works!!Alibee wrote:Been looking at this recipe and wondering how much Cascade comes through after a 90 min boil? Can you taste it or would any bittering hop do?

I might follow adm and stick some at 10/15 mins next time.

Re: 4 Shades of Stout

here it is again

Re: 4 Shades of Stout
Many thanks for the reply.
The search function finds looooaaaaaddddsss of links not all of them useful.
Sometimes it is better to ask someone who might know.

Hmm, I also had the problem trying to find this original recipe.
Which carafa special is that, I, II or III?
I am knocking up a small batch of dry stout this weekend but will probably try this recipe too as everyone seems to love it.

Absolutely CRACKING pint! Took a corni of this back home at Christmas. Brothers and Farther fell over themselves for it.

Re: 4 Shades of Stout
If any of you are into darker ales, try the recipe for Old Peculier which has Carafa III in it as well. I had a pint of mine last night, it hasn't been drank for a month or so, unbelievably good, smooth, balanced and very close to the original.
