Lager malt based pale ale

Post by yashicamat » Sat Sep 26, 2009 5:44 pm

I have 5kg of lager malt from BB recently which I had ordered as a trial to see how the malt behaves compared to normal pale malt. I'm just wondering what hops to pair it with, if it makes any difference?

Hops in "store":

- Northdown
- Cascade
- Amarillo
- Centennial

Thoughts folks? I'm thinking cascade at the moment as I am probably more familiar with the flavour characteristics of it than any of the other hops, so it should give a good basis for comparison.

Fermenting: nowt (sadly). Drinking: still a few bottles of my imperial stout knocking about . . . it's rather good now

Amarillo and Centennial would get my vote. First wort hop with Amarllo, Amarillo for bittering, then add a good dose of Centennial at 30 and 15. Loads of Centennial and Amarillo at flame out.

Mmm sounds nice. I was thinking about 1040ish gravity, then 10g centennial for bittering and 90g in for 5 mins at the end . . . . UK-05 ( ) as the yeast. That way I don't have to break open another packet.

Yeah, that would be killer. You'll get enough bitterness and very nice aroma with the late addition.

I did one recently

Blond Bombshell
4000g Lager Malt
200g Wheat
30g Cascade @ 60 mins AA 7.6%
10g Cascade @ 20 mins AA 7.6%
10g Cascade @ 10 mins AA 7.6%
11g Nottingham Yeast

This turned out with a really good flavour, i brewed a similar one but with Pale Malt and Safale S04
but the above one seems to have more hop flavour so i`m guessing its the yeast as the hop schedule
was exactly the same, so next time i`m at Pauls i`ll get some 05 Yeast and see what the difference is.
