Vossey's Oatmeal Stout
Vossey's Oatmeal Stout
I made this Saturday, apart from setting the first lot of oats on fire while multitasking it went ok and came out at 1048. Amazing thing is I pitched 500ml of Nottingham yeast cake from my earlier bitter onto 40 litres of the stout - it went off like a rocket in a cool garage. It was fermented by Tuesday and pretty much cleared by today with no finings. I cornied this lot and pulled a pint to test it. Man that is one hell of an awesome beer! Made Saturday and drinking Wednesday! Ok maybe the clariy is obscured by the dark colour, but that beer was pretty clear racking off with a nicely settled yeast cake. I filled my centrifuge tubes with more yeast, stuck them in the fridge and am enjoying a superb beer. I recommend that recipe. I can;t find the direct link as I am sure I spelt Vossey incorrectly but, Vossey - I tip one to you. Subsonic.
Re: Vossey's Oatmeal Stout
I think Vossy did the recipe from Clone Brews - which actually sounds like a fantastic idea for Christmas too. I have Clone Brews on the shelf, and I found a bag of oatmeal the other day staring at me out of the larder

Does anyone have a link to this recipe?
Re: Vossey's Oatmeal Stout
I've been singing the praises of this one since trying Vossy's version, tried twice to make my own but it was nowhere near as good (although not bad). I think I'm going to try again with some water adjustments.
I love the flavour of the toasted oats, they blend perfectly with the rest of the stout. A true breakfast beer. Magic!

Its on my list, or a variant of it

Re: Vossey's Oatmeal Stout
I've got this on tap at the moment. Highly recommend it. Mine was an odd one in that I ended up with 90% efficiency so I got 5 gallons of 1.060 stout! It's a nice drop.
Re: Vossey's Oatmeal Stout
I'm drinking a pint of this now, it's 11 months old tomorrow and a lovely drink. The only trouble is that it's got the worst head retention of any beer I've ever made, looks like coke! I guess that's the oil in the oats. Anyone else had that problem or is it just me?
Re: Vossey's Oatmeal Stout
Mine gave a good head. Mind you after 11 months solid I think getting a good bit of head may be pushing it flything! lol! As to the oil affecting your head best not go there! Sorry, I have had a few! Hic Subsonic

My beers were tasting like coke for a while until i replaced the seals from Norm's kegsflything wrote:I'm drinking a pint of this now, it's 11 months old tomorrow and a lovely drink. Head retention seems to be a completely random phenomenon for me, some beers will have great foam stand others won't, doesn't appear to correlate with anything.
