Classic pale ale

Post by Deebee » Mon Nov 09, 2009 12:26 pm

My first Ag was a classic pale ale.

i know it had

Pale malt
crystal malt
wheat malt and
carpils in it.

I remember the hops were target for bittering and both fuggles and target for the last 15 minutes.

I never kept the recipe and the guy i got it from is really hard to get a hold of. I am expecting to be able to do a double brew day soon and this is one i want to be a house beer.

The strength was about 4.2 but i can't find reference to anything else.

Can anyone help me out here

Thanks

How about 4Kg of pale, 250g of crystal and 100g of wheat for a grain bill. Not really much need for the carapils with those though....

That should get you to about 4.1% for 5 gallons.

For the hops, how bitter was it? If you went for a 1:1 BU/GU ratio, you could aim for 40IBU and do something like:

Target 10.4% AA 25g 90 mins
Target 10.4% AA 15g 15 mins
Fuggles 4.5% AA 20g 15 mins
Fuggles 4.5% AA 20g 0 mins

(Obviously, adjust the hop amount depending on the AA% of your own hops)

Thanks

Strangely enough just as i posted this thread a mail came through.... here is the recipe i had.

25 l
4000 pale
80 grams crystal
320 g carapils
320 Wheat

28 g target (13.6%) giving IBU of 30,5
14 g fuggles(4.2%) giving IBU 0.8
14 g fuggles at 5 minutes giving IBU 0.4)

based on efficiency of 79%.

My efficiency has been ok for the last 2 brews, 85 and 81 % respectively.

Wonder if i would be best aiming for this at a shorter brew length and give myself some room to increase( dilute) the amount at the end if the efficiency is high. Or should i just base it on 79%. afterall its not going to be many gravity points up or down with 81 or 75 respectively?

IS it?

Thanks for the help though. I appreciate it.
