Psudo Lager - for tasteless bland people?

Post by WishboneBrewery » Sun Dec 27, 2009 7:26 pm

I'd like to brew a Psudo-Lager, something bland...

Is the following just too much of a waste of good Hersbrucker? Any suggestions for something tasteless and bland for the stereotypical Lager drinker would be appreciated ;) Something that wouldn't offend the weak of pallet and those lacking in good taste!

Code: Select all

Lager

Fermentable	Colour	lb: oz	Grams	Ratio
Golden Promise	5 EBC	6 lbs. 9.8 oz	3000 grams	60%
Flaked Barley	3 EBC	3 lbs. 4.9 oz	1500 grams	30%
Munich Malt	20 EBC	1 lbs. 1.6 oz	500 grams	10%

Hop Variety	Type	Alpha	Time	lb: oz	grams	Ratio
Celeia	Whole	5.1 %	60 mins	0 lbs. 1.6 oz	45 grams	47.4%
Hallertauer Hersbrucker	Whole	2.9 %	60 mins	0 lbs. 1.1 oz	30 grams	31.6%
Hallertauer Hersbrucker	Whole	2.9 %	15 mins	0 lbs. 0.7 oz	20 grams	21.1%

Final Volume:	23	Litres
Original Gravity:	1.047
Final Gravity:	1.011
Alcohol Content:	4.6%	ABV
Total Liquor:	33.3	Litres
Mash Liquor:	12.5	Litres
Mash Efficiency:	75	%
Bitterness:	35.7767000742557	EBU
Colour:	10	EBC

It seems an awful waste of Golden Promise, sinful almost  Couldn't you just buy them some Coors Light?

I think your IBU`s are a little too high for a lager
they wanna be more around 20 ish, so you can use less of them :D
not wasting as much

You could give Mrs H's lager a go.

Lager Malt 2816g
British Caramalt 402g
Flaked Maize 402g
Brewing Sugar 402g
Saaz Hops 20 Bittering units, added at start of the boil.
Estimated OG 1042

This is a typical uk style lager & I only hope that she does not see this post or I am in for a thumping! [-X

You don't need maize. If you're going to go cheap, just use lager malt and about 15 IBU's.

Whorst: I wanted to try some Maize out anyway so its a fair excuse to get some. I'll work on the 15-20IBU's as suggested here though.. no late copper hops? :)

HH, thanks... I'll probably leave out the sugar, maybe replace with Flaked barley :)

Please be aware that the sugar makes up 10% of the recipe & replacing it with flaked barley may cause a haze problem. I found this on the H&G website.
Flaked cereals can, however, cause haze problems in paler styles, where the percentage should not exceed 5% ... Max. 10%

Not in this bland recipe, but that is how Mrs H likes it! However, it's your brew, if you like a lager with copper hops, get them in there.

So possibly better to up the Lager Malt and remove the Flaked barley, Probably bitter with Perle hops which a AA8.3 and throw in a 5 minute Saaz addition.
:)

*Edit
I might Just add a little sugar!

Now that looks a lot blander :D ,
I (well the missus) can vouch for HH recipe as thats what i based my lager on,
the only difference is i use Crystal hops instead of Saaz.

The idea is to create something fairly cheap that won't offend their tastes and will be appreciated by our builders... I'm guessing they are not particularly into their 'Real Ale', but they are doing a good job so thought I'd brew a bit of a Thank you for when they finish the job. :)
