Hi all,
My next brew will be an AG Wadworth 6X clone. I have looked at Graham Wheelers BYOBRA, Roger Protz Real Ale Almanac, the Wadworth Website and several threads on here. Only Graham's book mentions the use of black malt; albeit in a very small quantity. So now I'm not sure which way to go with this beer; if anyone has brewed this can they offer any advice please?

If I had all the money I'd spent on brewing... I'd spend it on brewing!

I have not brewed this myself, but I believe that the small amounts of black malt in some of the recipes in that book are for colour adjustment to the brew.

Ah, I see! That makes sense as not a lot of colour will come from just the pale and crystal. Thanks Horden Hillbilly.Horden Hillbilly wrote:I have not brewed this myself, but I believe that the small amounts of black malt in some of the recipes in that book are for colour adjustment to the brew.

Ive brewed this (AG) several times to Wheelers recipe, and its a winner. I live ~10 miles from the brewery, so I guess I have the right water or something. As others have said, the black malt is for colour and can be omitted. Wheeler says this too in his intro to the recipes (p86).

put a teaspoon of crosse and blackwell gravy browning in - it will give the same effect
