Amarillo Ale
Amarillo Ale
Mashing this now
Pale 5kg
Caramunich 250g
Wheat Malt 200g
Amarillo 20g - 60mins
Amarillo 45g - 10mins
Amarillo 25g - flameout
OG 1053
IBU 32
What do people think about the hop schedule? any changes? I've got some cascade too, and i've heard these go together well, but at the same time I kinda wanna do a single hop to get a taste for the hop, unless anyone can give me a good hop schedule to make me change my mind? Or give me a different one using just Amarillo

Re: Amarillo Ale
Do you have a 100g pack? If so why not throw the remaining 10g in at the end or dry hop with it.
Re: Amarillo Ale
Im almost certain its 90grams, from Craftbrewer. If it is 100 I shall add them at the end though...at the end or dry hop, which do you think? apart from that does it seem alright?
Re: Amarillo Ale
Sounds great - should come out lovely.
Personally, I'd throw in a few more hops at the beginning to get the IBUs up to 45 or so - but that's just my taste....
Have fun!

Re: Amarillo Ale
This sound better?
Amarillo 30g - 60mins
Amarillo 40g - 10mins
Amarillo 20g - flameout
IBU 40

That sounds great!
One comment - if you want to get (and keep) the most aroma from the Amarillo, put the flame out hops in when the wort has cooled to 80C - then continue to cool. That way, not so much of the aromatics get evaporated off. Probably.

Re: Amarillo Ale
My taste would be the opposite of ADMs, using more hops at the end of the boil, but then i'm not a big fan of tongue stripping bitterness - it's all about what you enjoy
Either that or use something in the freezer for bittering and save the Amarillo for aroma...
Yeah 90gm from CB

Re: Amarillo Ale
cheers for the advice. my FV feels scratched to [censored]. hope there is nothing lurking in it, i've given it a good scrub with soda crystals and a liberal dousing in star san though,
Re: Amarillo Ale
To tell the truth - my taste is actually very similar to Mysti's! If you aren't set on doing a pure Amarillo brew, then I'd use something else for the bittering addition to get to about 20 IBU or so, then 20-25 more IBU worth of the Amarillo at 15 minutes and then bung the rest of the bag in at the end.mysterio wrote:My taste would be the opposite of ADMs, using more hops at the end of the boil, but then i'm not a big fan of tongue stripping bitterness - it's all about what you enjoy![]()

If you only want to use Amarillo and only have 90g, then you aren't going to be able to use as many at the back end of course, but my personal favourite is to get half the total IBU from the bittering addition, then the other half from the flavour addition and then just add loads of hops right at the end!
Re: Amarillo Ale
This is gettin chilled now, chiller is working a treat. Fingers crossed that it will be drinkable!
Would there be any problems sticking it in a cornie, but only half filling the cornie, and bottling half? I'd assume not due to being sealed, but still might aswell double check

Re: Amarillo Ale
I would get a new FV mate, although you will more than likely be fine. Try not to 'scrub' it, as plastic becomes scratched even if you look at it the wrong way. I just spray some bleach (domestos and water in a spray bottle) on to loosen the crud then give it a wipe down with a soft sponge which does the trick. Getting it under a shower on the most powerful setting works well but if you live with a 'SWMBO' she may not be happy to find a gallon of yeast and trub sitting in the bath in the morning so make sure you clean up after you
No problem with the cornie thing, make sure the headspace is purged with CO2 obviously.

Re: Amarillo Ale
Yeah, I'm gonna just buy one after this brew, only a few quid. If this one gets infected i'll obviously be disappointed, but at least im back imto get excited about brewing again, so will bounce straight back.

Re: Amarillo Ale
Down to 1011 now, gonna keg and bottle it tonight. tastes amazing straight from the fermenter, hope it stays this nice!
Re: Amarillo Ale
Kegged this, made sure cornie was absolutely spotless, and flushed the tip tubes through and got the gunk out of them. Didnt bother with finings cos i didnt want to add any further risk to this not being drinkable, i've read nottingham clears quickly anyway so this shouldnt be too much of a problem. Fingers crossed that in a week or so I can start drinking something that isnt infected or nasty!
