Recipe for Southport Brewery's Golden Sands

Post by thefirstleachy » Sun Feb 07, 2010 10:52 pm

I have been trying to find a clone recipe for Southport Brewery's Golden Sands but can't find one anywhere. This beer won 2009 Championship Best Bitter at the Great British Beer Festival. It's bloomin gorgeous.

Does anybody have any recipes/ideas?

It's a nice golden ale which has a real hoppy flavour. The Brewery's website says it is triple hopped with citrus flavour. When I have drank it before I immediately think of cascade hops but citrus is more like styrian goldings. It doesn't look like it has much crystal but must have some carapils to give it that full mouthfeel.

What do people think?

Thanks Critch, that's quite a bit of help actually.

If I was in Paul's position I'd be cagey with my recipes too! With it beIng really light in colour I was thinking it may have a little lager malt. I'll try and put together something with the ingredients you have suggested. I can try and guess the IBU's as it's not too bitter, probably around 35.

The hops must be chinook and centennial with a huge amount of cascade near the end and at 80c.

I think I'll go for 70% Pale MO, 20% Lager Malt and 10% Malted wheat or Torrefied wheat. I'll have to look at what wheat to use as I've not used it much. With the hops at 90mins, 30mins and 5 mins plus flameout adding upto 35 IBUs and take it from there.

I've been dying to use Chinook! I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi Critch.

Do you use it just for bittering or for aroma too? How much do you use and when? I'm trying to find out whether 90 mins or 60mins is the best starting point for bittering and also when to try and get your IBU's i.e. Mostly at the start and some near the end with loads at flameout or whether you try and get very few IBU's at the beginning and most near the end.

Is there a big difference between the two methods?

Cheers

i throw about 30 ebu'sworth of chinook in at 90 then massively hop at the end of boil and halfway through the rest.

i do boil some beers for less time and get good results too. to get the best out of the a.a.'s you have to boil them for an hour or more

You could plant some spy cams in the brewery and release the recipes anonymously. Time to do the right thing and show your loyalty and commitment to JBK.
