Summer Ale Recipes - Suggestions?

Post by floydmeddler » Sun Mar 07, 2010 1:34 pm

Hey all,

I want to get planning my summer ales. Along with my Honey and Elderflower Ale, I want to brew something (25L batch) tangy and zesty. I'm planning on using orange zest (40g-50g) and crushed coriander seeds (1 1/2 teaspoons)

Any advice on which hops to go for?

Cheers... Roll on the sun!!!!!!!!

Bobek has a nice lemony taste which might go well with the orange.

That's funny. I had already put that into the recipe earlier as I had a good feeling about it. Perhaps that's the one then!

Anyone disagree?

I'm mad on GW's Exmoor Gold, wonderful stuff.
I've just brewed an elderflower, using challenger and fuggles having clarity problems with it, did yours do this?
Hoping to find a recipe using Beata and Magnum for a light summer ale that'd take chilling for my lager friends...theres a thread on this hereabouts.

Yep, I have had clarity problems when using dried elderflower. Perhaps I'll use finings for this next one. I don't mind too much anyway to be honest.

I also had clarity issues but some KwickClear sorted that out in 24 hours before racking to keg.

What does the addition of crushed coriander seeds do for the beer, (apart from the taste of coriander  ) I have seen it referenced before on the forum, but cannot imagine the outcome?

I would go for either Bobek, Aurora or First Gold. These are all citrussy and fairly mild, great for fast drinking summer ales.

Mmmmmmmm First Gold... def a summer hop, Bobek would be nice but I use that in all beers, first gold I have saved for pale summer beers - lots of the IBU's at the end of the boil.. 8)

Not entirely sure... Will tell you in a load of weeks when I'm drinking a glass of it!
