First Gold & Cascade-now dry hopped with 25g cascade
First Gold & Cascade-now dry hopped with 25g cascade
I'm thinking about doing a 23ltr brew based on First Gold & Cascade, has anyone tried this & if so, how was it?
Grain will be about 4.25kg maris otta, although thinking about getting a sack of pale malt. Can someone comment on any subtle taste difference in using maris otta or pale malt. The reason I ask about the grain is having visited Theakstons & doing a quick tour, I noticed the bulk of their grain was pale malt, as opposed to maris otta (there was no MO in sight). Never really enjoy the Theakston brews, apart from OP & was left wondering if its the taste from the pale malt.
If it is, then I'll stick to using maris otta.
thanks

Re: First Gold & Cascade-Recipe Suggestion Please
MO is a type of pale malt.
If you buy pale malt there is a good chance it will be MO.
As regards your recipe, i would include more types of malt, at least a bit of crystal and maybe some wheat or torri wheat.
There are great brews made using only pale malt, but it will be harder for you to make a really good one IMO.

Re: First Gold & Cascade-Recipe Suggestion Please
Thanks Dave O, usually throw 150g of crystal in for a bit of colour. Might try Golden Promise for a change, last 25+ AG's have used maris otta as bulk of grain.
So,
4.25kg maris otta, or golden promise
150g crystal
50g First Gold 90mins
25g Cascade 30 mins
15g First Gold 5 mins
15g Cascade 0 mins
Will beer engine it tonight & see what IBU's it come out at.
All suggestions welcomed before brewing next week.
thanks

Re: First Gold & Cascade-Recipe Suggestion Please
EBU comes out at 64 assuming first gold @8.3 and cascade@5.7
abv 4.3%
It's a bit bitter for a brew of that gravity for me. 20g first gold @90, 25g cascade @ 30 and 30g first gold @ 5 will give an EBU of 36
Brings it down into my preferred area

Re: First Gold & Cascade-Recipe Suggestion Please
I recently did a single malt brew
using only MO (6k), northern brewer and progress.
Probably the best brew I've ever done. Great clean taste, 61 IBU.

Re: First Gold & Cascade-Recipe Suggestion Please
Thanks quiff,
That saved a bit of number crunching. Without checking I think the hops are a bit lower than 8.3 & 5.7. I agree 64 is quite high, although tend to have them in the order of 45 - 60, depending on 4.5 - 5.5% abv. Will work something tonight.
Still very interested to here from anyone who has done a First Gold/Cascade and how the results were.
Had a couple of pints of Brew Dog, Trashy Blonde in the local on Sunday. Wow! - where can I get some Motoeka hops from???
thanks

Something I'm defs going to try one of these brew days. First Gold and Cascade just seem right because of their citrus qualities. Do it!
As far as single malt goes, Maris Otter has worked out ok for me on its own. However, you can always malt it up by mashing at around 71c.

Re: First Gold & Cascade- now fermenting!
Im just trying Halcyon after first using Maris Otter and Pearl. No difference at all apart from price and personal preference.
Re: First Gold & Cascade-Recipe Comments Please

Good stuff! let us know what the FG ends up as and whether or not it adds maltiness.

Re: First Gold & Cascade- now fermenting!
Will do, the original gravity was dead on the nail, which i wasn`t expecting i thought it would have been down a bit mashingfloydmeddler wrote:Good stuff! let us know what the FG ends up as and whether or not it adds maltiness.
at 71 Deg.
Re: First Gold & Cascade- now fermenting!
These golden summer ales are what I'm well into brewing at the moment, Exmoor Gold, Summer Lightning etc. I did one with elderflowers in too, proper summer flavour. When the fresh elderflowers are out its going to be brew madness in our house!
Its all bobeks and goldings at the moment for me. But I can see me going for some of these 'exotic' hops. My brother has been raving about some New Zealand hops he used at his brewing course recently, cannot remember their name. He said they smelt like 'skunk'....er...whatever thats like.
