For some reason something went tits yp when i weiged the grist for my next brew.
i ended up with 5800 pale and not 3200 as planned.
This means my nice gentle 20 litre brew of 4.2 is a no goer.
The grist is all mixed and i can't do anything about that so.. HELP.
here is the recipe.
5800 Pale
244 crystal
175 torr wheat
120 Amber
20 black
Hops
challenger to 26 ibu for 60
goldings to 6.9 IBU for 10
Goldings to .6 IBU for 1
White labes essex ale
Plan was a to43 OG this is now at 1074.
even by lengthening this to 25 litres i still have a beer at 1060 which is not what i wanted.
If i make the 25 litre batch and then dilute with 2 litres i get a more managable 5.3% but the IBU drops too.
The last problem is that the FV i hav is a 27 litre plus head room. If i go to 27 litres then chances are i might end up blowing the lid off? And the IBU will drop by a couple of points-.
The boiler i have is a 36 litre one.
With deadspace , and boil off i am going to need say 33 litres and would imagine thee will be a good chance of boil over.
So gents what do i do.
Do i up the IBU so that if i add some water at the end then it will not be too weak.
or soes the recipe sound ok as it is even with the dilution to a better gravity at the end?
Thanks
tips please!I ballsed up BIG TIME-
Major cock up, advice please

Chris-x1 wrote:Halve the mixed grist, and add 300g of pale, 122g crystal, 87g TW, 60g amber, 10g black and bingo you have the original recipe which you can make as planned.
Bag up the remaining grain bill which you can top up and modify at a later date.
So i just need to mix it well before i halv it?
nice one!!
i'll ee what time allows and away we go! that will make the original 20 litre brew with 3200 pale?
Thaks mate

Re: Major cock up, advice please
Ok.
If I halve 6359 then i get 3179 so if we take it for granted that we actually get half of everything this will mean 2900 pale 60 amber 87.5 torri wheat, 122 crystal and 10 black
so adding 300 pale, 60 amber, 88 torri wheat , 122 crystal and 10 black does the job nicely.
Thanks,
Either way it should still be a nice beer, nd i'll know what to dough in with ( most importantly!
Thanks you are ( as always) a star!
Need to go find something bigger to mix it in thouygh... then get something smaller that fits on the scales properly so that i can weight out HALF!!

Re: Major cock up, advice please
i guess i could always halve the mix and cut to a 18 l brew. Would give about 4% would it not, based on 75% efficiency.↲Then i can modify the other part as Chris suggested.↲Any thoughts?
Re: Major cock up, advice please
Alternative suggestion.
If you have not mixed the grains you will probably be able to burrow in and remove the surplus pale without removing any of the other malts. When I weigh malts out I end up with a bucket of pale with the other malts just tipped on top. I don't mix them until they are in the mash tun.

I'd have not worried about it, and just made the 7% ABV beer
Yummy

Me and 20 litres of 7 5 beer....hmmmm not a good combination.
besides Swmbo would not let me brew more if i make something that she considered undrinkable:)
