Things i think about in the shower

Post by pantsmachine » Thu May 13, 2010 8:44 am

Having a shower this morning and THE thought hit me. Really dark beer(almost Guiness) fermented with high ester yeast. That'll do me.

From there i thought about chocolate malt and dark crystal malt with a touch of roast Barley and i'm now into using both T58 and S-33 as the yeasts of choice. Think i'll have a crack at making some inverted sugar as well.

I think this comes off the back of a pint of Budvar Dark i had on Tuesday night.

There are a few out their doing Belgian stouts/porters some of the Trappist yeast would be fantastic. Just be aware that S-33 is the old English EDME stain its not Belgian strain but great for porter/stouts

Cheers Oblivious. Have you by any chance read Richard Preston First Light? I might have a trawl through morrsions and pick up a bottle of chimay to to culture(Iain M Banks) and add mid fermentation when i ramp the temperature up. No hurry on this one, its just fermenting away in the back of my mind.

I'd like to see some of his Culture ships given brewing-related names, perhaps "GSV Rapid Attenuation" or "ROU Chill Haze"

Well that's set in stone. This will have to be a culture related named beer. Will it be a heavy lifter, a GSV or a very fast picket?

Who says supermarket shopping can't be fun. I had every bottle of chimay and duvel held up to the light to pick my babies. Ah the possibilities!

SWMBO isn't home for a while. Reckon i've got time to invert this sugar to a hard crack, now where's that stainless pan? Pictures to follow.....

I would have to say a Delinquent-class General Offensive Unit

You are right, sheesh what was i thinking?
Shiny!

More shiny
Image
2kgs granulated sugar
Image
About a pint of water and 3 squeezes of plastic lemon

Boil on

Holding at 250 deg F

20 minutes in

25 minutes in continued to darken. Turned up the gas and let it rise to 300Deg F and held for 5 minutes

Poured it into tray to cool

Realised as i was pouring it into the tray that you REALLY don't want to mess this stage up. 300 degree F sticky solution on the legs? No thanks!

I liked that. 1/2 an hours work,£3.30 which includes the disposable tray. Voila 2kgs of candi rocks. kept thinking about that freaky child snatching lollipop man from Chitty chitty Bang Bang when i was doing it though! He's scary!

Took my instructions from here

Well done on the napalm production!

It looks like (and is, i suppose) a huge boiled sweet.

I hope you've got a toffee hammer to break it up.

Maybe you have your name then - The GSV Child Catcher. Not sure it quite fits in with Culture ideology.....

That has to be field generation technology at work.

Have fun explaining that one to people who don't know you very well (and police etc.)!

Yeah i know. What can you do though? It never used to be like this, got to just live your life and know your hearts pure. Can you imagine trying to get the child catcher character into a movie nowadays? The media and political correctness has an awful lot to answer for! I combat this be asking my kids to read books by Neil Gaiman and Clive Barker. Gives them the terror zing that i think is missing today for them. :)

The instructions were bang on about how to make this stuff even down to the darkening as it cools

I like your beer, your pics AND your taste in SciFi authors.....

Have you read any Peter F Hamilton?
