Deuchars IPA

Post by pas8280 » Mon Jun 28, 2010 9:00 pm

It's brew day this Thursday and i had penciled in Deuchars IPA from Graham's book i quite fancied it just from the description alone having never sampled it !
This however was remieded last Thursday in the Deansgate Pub, Fallowfield, Manchester.

To be honest not that impressed it seemed bitter and over hopped to the extent it tasted harsh, now i am hoping it is just a bad pint because daft as i am i still fancy having a go at it, what do you esteemed beer officionardo's think of it on draught ???

In addition i thought about just tinkering with the recipe a little by splitting the 90 min boil hops 50/50 between Fuggles and Brambling Cross to up the fruitiness a little, also thought about the late (flame out ) addition of a few Bobek

What are your thoughts on this please

Like any beer on draught, most times you get it it's highly disappointing. A good pint of Deuchars really hits the spot but 9 times out of 10 even here in Edinburgh it's pretty lacklustre.

Ive been into a pub and had a pint hand pulled thats been amazing. a month later went back into the same pub and it was as you say, harsh and not tasty! I think its all down to how its been kept and how long its been sat in the lines.

More often than not it's pretty poor. Many of the pale, hoppy beers are easily screwed up by poor handling either in the pub or in distribution.

I can't really add much to what's already been said.

I do enjoy a Deuchars when it's kept well, I like that it's light and not too bitter or overpowering.

But all too often it comes out a bit harsh or tangy (not in a good way). I've also had it come out tasting watery and weak, which obviously wasn't nice either.

a really good Deuchars IPA alternative is York Brewery's Guzzler! Ive never had a bad pint (but then I do only live a couple of miles from the brewery), I fully intend to get the recipe and add it to my list of must brews!
