Gold Digger

Post by pas8280 » Wed Jul 07, 2010 5:55 pm

Hi all just wondering if anyone can help me out with a recipe for Bank Top's Gold Digger thier web site says "Golden coloured with citrus aroma,Grapefruit and a touch of spiceness on the palate leading to a fresh, hoppy citrus finish"
I had a few pints of this last night and allthough i could taste a little grapefruit the predominant flavour was a little difficult to tie down a slight coffeeish twang very nice i must say :)

Grapefruit may suggest cascade? Spicyness could be many things, but goldings could be a reasonable bet.

For that citrus/grapefruit taste it is almost certain to be cascade and/or amarillo This may be of interest http://kotmf.com/articles/hopslist.php

It could also be Chinook.
Otley Brewery do "Motley Brew" which is almost like drinking grapefruit juice - fantastic if you like grapefruit! =P~
(But the bugas are no good at answering emails  )

Chinook also gives "Proper Job" it's grapefruit aroma and flavour.

From a website review:
"I could swear there were Cascade hops in there but Dave Sweeney (Bank Top owner) said there wasn't"

I emailed Bank Top yesterday but so far nothing back, i was thinking Brambling Cross for the grapefruit flavour but as i say its not the predominant so Goldings could well be in there as well ? keep my fingers crossed for a response :)

BX is more of a red fruit flavour, i.e. blackcurrants. It's not citrussy at all IMO.

Spoke to Will Rogers from Charles Faram who recommended a combo of Chinook, Celeia and Willamette if you want a big grapefruit hit. Cascade, Amarillo and Nelson Sauvin would also be a good shout.

Kipling from Thornbridge is very grapefruity and they only mention Nelson Sauvin on the bottle.

Sorry chap,

Nelson Sauvin (NS) does not have one ounce of grapefruit characteristic - full stop [-X . Mr Kiplin must've had a rogue bag of chinook labled as NS, if that's the case.

Bramlin Cross has a good flavour, blackcurrent fruit flavour ( like York Brewery English Pride) =P~

I agree with befuggled, most likely chinook - high AA - monster grapefruit flavour =P~

Centennial also grapefruity :D Why not do a single hop brew of each with same grain bill to appreciate the flavour. P.S. dont do Nelson Sauvin brew first - as a) it wont last a week b) you wont brew another type of beer. Go on I dare you!

Those cheeky monkeys are telling porky pies then :^o

What's the single hop NS like then? Heard loads of people raving about it as a hop but never used it. NZ Cascade and Motueka are superb.

Recent brews using 4kg maris otter, 175gm pale wheat malt and 100gms of Nelson Sauvin, mostly for flavour & aroma results in what I'd describe as a very tropical fruit flavour - some describe mango, kiwi etc - delicious. A unique and very tastey beer.

Haven't used Motueka yet, but recently tried Dizzy Blonde on draught and really liked it.
