OK so this is going to be a first.. I want to make a fresh/green hop ale as I am actually at home when some of my hops are coming good(WGV and Challenger). Normally the SWMBO does the hop drying duties are I am usually away, and in truth this will be the case when most of the crop comes good.
Has anyone got a rule of thumb for using green or fresh hops in a ale? This beer will be for drinking come January as I will be away working till then... Part of me thinks using a DP recipe with a load of late addition hops, as the 5 months will allow any anomalies to mellow out.

Fresh/green hop recipe
Re: Fresh/green hop recipe
I think the "finger in the air" figure is that fresh hops are 4 times the weight of dry hops.
Obviously this is a rough estimate and in any case you have no easy way of knowing the %AA of the hops but quadrupling the amount of hops in a recipe would be a decent starting point. The alternative is to only use the fresh hops for aroma and to get the bittering from more known, dried hops.

Cheers Boingy
I am not that worried about using fresh hops as bittering, having had a few kilos last year, I have got used to figuring out a ball park figure using AA% range for each hop variety... if its under hoped drink sooner, over by a bit leave for while longer.
hmmm a green IPA... wonder what my loses to my hops would be... seeing as they would not be dried.

Losses from green hops not as much as from dried ones - but you'll need a massive amount more by weight for the "same" effect (though obviously, the green hop flavour is much different). Last year tried the Fresh Hop IPA brewed by Lovibonds in Henley using hops grown up the brewery wall as well as any others they could lay their hands on - it was excellent.
