Hi there,
I'm planning a brew for tomorrow using
3kg LME
1kg DME
200g Crystal
100g cascade
100g bobek
Just wondering whether anyuone could give me any ideas for a good hop schedule with these hops, I'm still pretty new to the game but I was thinking about using the cascasde as a bittering hop and the bobek more for aroma....
Can anyone help me expand these ideas!!
Cheers!
Cascade/Bobek extract ideas?
Re: Cascade/Bobek extract ideas?
Cascade and Bobek go great together as flavour hops IMO.
I'd go:
3kg LME
200g Crystal
50g of each hop, mixed together, split it into 3 and add one at 15 minutes, one at 5 minutes and one at flame out, and steep for at least 30 mins.
You'll get loads of flavour and no harsh bitterness.

Brilliant, thanks for that. So do you think it would be too much if I put them all in? I was trying to go for quite a hoppy flavoursome beer. And you don't think I should put any in at the beginning as a bittering hop? (not just a little bit?!)
Also on that note since it is an extract brew does it then follow that I don't really need to boil for an hour but just do a shorter boil for 15 minutes with those additions, if you see what i mean?!
Thanks

Well it's up to you and what you like. I've stopped putting bittering hops in light, hoppy beers and i love it. You'll still get some bitterness, but mainly lots of flavour.benna wrote: Brilliant, thanks for that. Of course there's no harm in putting them all in if you want to, but IMO 100g is quite enough with those two highly flavoursome hops.
I did pretty much that exact recipe (but all-grain) a couple of months ago and it's great.
I've never brewed with extract, but i believe people often go for 30 minute boils.benna wrote:Also on that note since it is an extract brew does it then follow that I don't really need to boil for an hour but just do a shorter boil for 15 minutes with those additions, if you see what i mean?!

Re: Cascade/Bobek extract ideas?
well here's how it ended up:
3kg LME
500g DME
300g Crystal Malt
35g Cascade 60min
20g Cascade 15min
20g Bobek 15min
15g Cascade 5min
15g Bobek 5min
15g Cascade 0 min (for half an hour)
15g Bobek 0 min (for half an hour)
OG 1049
FG 1011
5% alc
Colour 22 EBC
Bitterness 32 EBU
OG turned out about 1048 and FG about 1012, I then dry hopped it with 15g Cascade and 15g Bobek in the pressure barrel as we speak.
It is bloody lovely!!! really pleased with it, by far the best beer I've done, next I'm gonna try some sort of St. Peter's Ruby beer.
Thanks for your help!!
