Nelson Sauvin single hop
Nelson Sauvin single hop
Previous batch was a Bobek single hop which is turning out great. Almost ready for kegging/bottling.
Next batch is this little nameless fella. Hopefully get some time next week to get this on. Thought I'd run it past you learned fellows for feedback and inspiration before taking the plunge.
Maris Otter Pale Malt, 4.5 EBC, 7310 grams, 90%
Caramalt, 30 EBC, 810 grams 10%
Nelson Sauvin, Whole, 13 %, 90 mins, 5 grams
Nelson Sauvin, Whole, 13 %, 20 mins, 25 gram
Nelson Sauvin, Whole, 13 %, 10 mins, 70 gram
Nelson Sauvin, Whole, 13 %, 80 degs, 50 gram
Nelson Sauvin, Whole, 13 %, Dry hop, 50 gram
Final Volume: 40 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.045
Final Gravity: 1.011
Alcohol Content: 4.4% ABV
Total Liquor: 60.1 Litres
Mash Liquor: 18.7 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 37 EBU
Colour: 11 EBC
Mash temp: 67 degs
Yeast: WLP051
How does this look? Any suggestions? I want to try a slightly higher mash temp and also some Caramalt to add a little bit of residual sweetness. Never used NS before so slightly concerned about going OTT with the gooseberry/sauvignon blanc character?

Re: Nelson Sauvin single hop
That looks wonderful. Give it time to age though -- my NS single hop ale was good when it was young, but stunning after 6 months.

Re: Nelson Sauvin single hop
You have to keep us posted! I've been meaning to do a smash with just NS for some time, I love them. Good luck with the brew, it looks like a winner!
Re: Nelson Sauvin single hop
I'm looking forward to this one. The hardest part is discipline! I keep reading threads with people saying NS goes great with Simcoe, Amarillo, Bobek, sweaty Y-fronts, this that and the next thing.........aaarrghhh!
My method of countering this temptation is only to order enough stuff for my next brew! Possibly more expensive but ensures I don't veer off the path of righteousness!

Re: Nelson Sauvin single hop
Now that there are some excellent suppliers selling grain and hops by the g it seems like a good idea.
Never heard about the NS with y-fronts though .. but then again, haven't been to soho recently!

Re: Nelson Sauvin single hop
I'm drinking a Nelson Sauvin single hop ale right now, brewed exactly a month ago. It's not too different from your recipe, except it's more bitter (I used 20g@60, 30g@20 and 50@80 °C, IIRC, a 23 litre batch), and with a mixture of flaked grains instead of the caramalt. It's nice enough. The Nelson Sauvin is like the American citrus hop's gentle cousin; more mandarin than grapefruit. Very inoffensive, but still with a lot of character.
it's good on its own, but I think it would be even better combined with some cascade/centennial/(simcoe might be a good idea!)/etc.

Re: Nelson Sauvin single hop
from the amount your using you should be able to taste the hint of grape farams talk about!
ive used this hop as aroma and bittering hops as well as a single variatal, it worked splendidly in all cases

It's one of the real pleasures of brewing my own. You can go completely over the top and experience tastes and smells that (by and large) you can't find in commercial brews (with the exception of some beers from UK innovators and the Yanks).
