Oatmeal Porter?

Post by Spud395 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 10:00 pm

Lining up a few brews and this is a stab at a porter, what does it look like.
Not sure about the goldings at 15 mins?
Up the crystal/caramalt to 10% between them?
Maybe a touch (50g) of roast barley?

Pale Malt 5 EBC 4000 grams 63.5%
Oat Flakes 2.5 EBC 1000 grams 15.9%
Caramalt 30 EBC 250 grams 4%
Crystal Malt130 EBC 250 grams 4%
Chocolate Malt 1050 EBC 200 grams 3.2%
Black Malt 1300 EBC 200 grams 3.2%
Amber Malt 60 EBC 200 grams 3.2%
Munich Malt 20 EBC 200 grams 3.2%

Target Whole 11.4 % 60 mins 41 grams 78.8%
East Kent Golding Whole 6.8 % 15 mins 11 grams 21.2%

Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.059
Final Gravity: 1.017
Alcohol Content: 5.5% ABV
Bitterness: 47 EBU
Colour: 179 EBC

Thoughts please

Sounds good, although I wouldn't bother with the caramalt (don't think it'll add much with that grain bill). Roasted barley would, IMHO, make this a stout . . . although there is a very blurred boundary between porter and stout. I keep RB out of my porters for that reason . . .

My 2p's - with that sort of grain bill, you'll always end up with a tasty beer. :)

POTTER BREWERY (mothballed 2020)

Fermenting: nowt (sadly). Drinking: still a few bottles of my imperial stout knocking about . . . it's rather good now

I would be tempted to swap the choc out for brown malt, if you have any.
