Re: apollo hops any recipes ?
Why not SMaSH it?
All Pale to around 5-5.5% ABV
Apollo at around 1:1 BU:GU with a tonne late (5,1,0 min). Apollo is a great dual purpose hop and one of my favourite US Super Alphas - citrus/tropical flavours with a bit of resin.
Use a nice clean yeast US 05 or one of the White Labs (california ale of california V). Won't disappoint, promise.

sorry... naughty of me... trying to save time...alfie09 wrote:sorry what does 1:1 bu:gu mean lol?

BU:GU is the ratio of IBUs to Original Gravity. For example a wort that has a calculated IBU of 45 and an Original Gravity of 1055 would have a ratio of 45:55 which is approximately a BU:GU of 0.8. I find it quite a good measure to use in designing recipes for balancing bitterness. I first saw it used in Ray Daniels' book "Designing Great Beers".
Re: apollo hops any recipes ?
sorry its just a bit beyond me so what would be best for something of 0.8 or should i raise it higher
sorry to sound dumb

Re: apollo hops any recipes ?
was a nice beer all gone last weekend. what do the BU-GU matching actually do why match them up with the starting gravity? what does it affect cheers
Re: apollo hops any recipes ?
Just a way of saying that you need more IBUs to match the higher gravity because it will be sweeter. For example 40 IBUs doesn't tell you how bitter a beer will be unless you know the OG. So it might be intensely bitter in a 1.030 beer but sweet in a 1.060 beer because of the increased sweetness.
How were the apollo hops then?

Re: apollo hops any recipes ?
really nice very fruity. what are they suppose to tatse like?. someone said to me there like a super charged hop of like amarillo or is it something else?
Re: apollo hops any recipes ?
Taste like Columbus, sort of piney, with citrus like qualities I would say. Very nice.
Re: apollo hops any recipes ?
Just to add - I did the SMaSH recipe, with the exception of an extra 300g of flakd maize, and hav now bottled it. Was forced by the mrs and my housemate to open a bottle last night. Just awesome, even after only 2 days in bottles. Tastes a lot like Darkstar's Hophead.
Thanks to all.

Just recapping on my Apollo SMASH and brewing another APA type of thing.
The hopiness aroma didn't last very long in the beer, and ended up going from hero to zero
Just tried another brew, this time citra at 14.5%. Using up odds and ends. Any view on what this may turn out like? Tasted fairly bitter at wort stage
25l
3.2kg pale malt
500g lager malt
200g crystal malt
10g citra at boil
30g fuggles at boil
15g citra at 15m from end
20g citra 5m from end
20g citra 1m from end
20g citra flame out
15g citra left to dry hop
any views?

Will,
How long was the time to lose flavour? I have a load of Apollo to use up and I'm curious...
