So k brewed the recipd given. Got better efficiency than expected. So i have 23l almost fermented out. Have 200 g nelson pellets. How much to dry hop? Am thinking 3-4 g pr litre for 4days.
Thoughts?

The first time I did this it was a partial mash and used some old liquid extract that was just on it's best by date, I wasn't really that impressed.
Just started drinking my second attempt, this time was a full mash and I only used half the steep hops, the other half I dry hopped with for a week after 6 days of the ferment.

Not sure if it was the old malt extract in my 1st try or the fact that I dry hopped this 2nd attempt but the difference between the two beers is immense. This 2nd version is much closer to the Kipling that I remember. Needless to say I'll be ordering some more NS's on my next order :D

Cheers Tom

Hi all,

After a lot of searching for a Kipling recipe (my favourite beer) I was thrilled to come across this thread. This will be my second ever brew (the first was from a kit) and as I’m a newbie, I think the ‘Brew In A Bag’ method would suit me best at this point.

However, I’m a little confused about how to put the brewers recipe (below) together. I’d really appreciate any advice for a total novice on adapting this recipe to the ‘Brew In A Bag’ method, including times, temps, weights etc. I will be using a 20L stockpot.

Oh, I only have 100g of NS (11.3% alpha), the grains are pre-crushed and also, what yeast is used?

Leave it with me (though terminology as usual an issue. What is meant by batch size? Ambient volume at end of boil, volume into FV or is it packaging volume? I shall try to work it back from the ibu value). hmm, alpha values for hops differ, gonna have to guess that batch size is FV volume

assume 90 min mash (as is usual with BIAB) with mash temp 67 degree C. All alpha values and SRM values as above

Max batch into FV with that size pot without a sparge stage of 9.5 litres.

Total water needed 16.07 litres
Lager malt 1935g
Munich Malt 170g
Torry wheat 170g

Mash at 67c for 90 mins
End of mash gravity 1.039

Boil for 60 minutes hop additions as follows;

Nelson Sauvin 5g 60 mins
Nelson Sauvin 5g 30 mins
Nelson Sauvin 16.3g flameout

Volume of ambient wort at end of boil 11.08 litres gravity of 1.050
Kettle to FV loss of 1.58 litres
Vol into FV of 9.5 litres should give volume into packaging of 8.80 litres

Calcs worked out with BIABacus version PR1.3T from http://www.biabrewer.info which I suggest you join as well as Jims

Brilliant! Thanks so much for taking the time jaberry!

The hops additions look kind of light though compared with the original recipe (from a ratio persepctive)? The grain amounts are roughly half of the original, but the hops are much less than half the original? Is that correct?

Oh, also what yeast and how much do you recommend for this recipe?

Oops. Yes, had a cell filled in that shouldn't have been. Hop schedule as follows

11.2g 60 mins
11.2g 30 mins
36.6g flameout.

Personality I would just chuck in a sachet of US05

That's right. Thornbridge uses "Chico" American Ale available as US05, as well as Wyeast 1056, White Labs WLP001, etc.

Thank you jaberry and seymour. One final question though, would you recommend about 6g of US-05 for this volume?

if you have an 11g sachet I would chuck it all in rather than try to pro rata for your reduced volume.

+1. I only do small batches and just chuck a pack in, for the sake of pennies it's just not worth worrying about though of course you could reuse the yeast to make it go further
