Help to find book/recipe

Post by FUBAR » Thu Dec 30, 2010 5:07 pm

I had a book in the early eighties that I ordered through the Amatuer Winemaker magazine that was much like G.Wheelers book, and had clone recipes for commercially brewed ales.I have been trying to get hold of a copy after my original book has somehow vanished, trouble is I have not got a clue who the author is or the title, its not Dave Lines BBLTYB or any of the other selection of books in my local HB shop.So if anyone has any idea of the author/title? I may be able to find a copy.
The only recipe in there that I really want is for Fremlins Bitter which was one of my favourite beers from a local brewery that was sadly like a lot of others taken over by Whitbread and closed down :( .Now that I am AG brewing and would love to brew a clone of this beer and that book had the only recipe for it that I am aware of,hope one of you lads can help [-o<

Cheers FUBAR

The only other British clone book I know of is the Mark Olloson one which is 1990`s. Was it British or American.

I am pretty sure it was British, dont think it was Mark Olloson as the book was ordered out of Amatuer Winemaker magazine and I think that was not on sale after the late eighties.I will try and find that book on Amazon.

It isn't Marc Ollosson, maybe the real ale almanac? Was it a detailed recipe?

Yes it was a detailed recipe,I know at the time I was extract brewing and this was a recipe that could not be done with malt extract.

This one has really made me curious, I have always looked out for this type of book and used to read amateur winemaking magazine but this one seems to have escaped me

I almost feel like J R Hartley in the old yellow pages adverts trying to find this bloody book  ,the only recipe for Fremlins that I have found on another forum is a bit sketchy to say the least.
O.G 1035
Pale Malt 70%
Crystal Malt 4%
Torrified Wheat 12%
Sugar 14%
Hop Extract 100% .Dry hopped with Styrian Goldings pellets :?
The Fremlins brewed bitter was malty with a bit of a cob nut flavour, finishing with a nice clean hoppy taste if that makes sense.

Interesting to see that Fremlins once owned Adnams...

It's not Ollosson, unless it is one of the un-named beers.
It's not in C.J.J Berry "Home Brewed Beers and Stouts" - again, unless re-named.
I can't see a reference in DL's "Big Book of Brewing", but I have a 1985 edition which has other AW titles at the rear:
"Brewing Better Beers" - Ken Shales
"Hints on Home Brewing" - CJJ Berry
"The Happy Brewer" - Wilf Newsom
"Home Brewing for Americans" - David Miller
"All about Beer" - Bob Pritchard

I do not know any of these books, but it might be one of them, or by one of these authors.

The notorious 1500UK beers list says:
503. Fremlins PompeyRoyal 1043 67.5% Pale, 7.5% X, 12.5% TW, 12.5% Sugar Hop Extract, SG SG RP1
505. Fremlins Bitter 1035 70% Pale, 4% X, 12% TW, 14% Sugar Hop Extract SG RP1
(Same as your own findings)

There is no reference to Fremlins in my 5th Edition RA Almanac.

So it looks like a rather malty beer, maybe only 15 IBU or so, probably nowadays with Bobek??

Good luck!

Looking at Befuggled's list of possible books, C.J.Berry's book can be ruled out as his beer recipes were awful, and if he had, however unlikely, given one for a Fremlin's AG clone, it would not have been worth trying. Ken Shales' recipes were good for their day, but confined to malt extract brews. The other ones I am not sure about, but I am intrigued.

Have got hold of the book now it is Real Ales for the homebrewer by Marc Olloson the recipe is on page 99,the recipe is slightly different to the other recipe that I found online, suppose the best thing is to try brewing a batch of each recipe'

Best of luck with it - please report back on your results

Me neither, Sheppard Neame are the current owner and they aren't in that book. I should have checked for previous owners

Anyway, hope it goes well FUBAR.
