Scottish Light or 60/- Extract Recipe - Wanted

Post by niallac » Sat Apr 16, 2011 1:45 am

Dear All,

I recently posted a similarly-titled topic in the Kits forum, but have received no response from any members who actually brew this type of beer :(

I am hoping that someone will find my post here, and share their wealth of experience on brewing light. I don't have the facilities, time or space needed for AG so I'm really looking for a modified kit or extract recipe only. I have at my disposal a large stock pot and all the other stuff needed to boil hops and extract, and to steep grains.

All input gratefully accepted!

Cheers,

Niall

60 bob is pretty much extinct. It only survives in the Tennent's and McEwan's keg versions, which are quite different from each other (and even those are difficult to find). Tennent's is a little fudgy in flavour while McEwan's has a roast barley character like a weak porter. Belhaven make a cask 60/— for beer festivals, which somehow manages to have less flavour than the keg ones.

If I were you I'd do something like make a 3% beer with extract and some steeped roast barley and crystal, slightly less crystal than RB.

Hi, IS.

You are right - 60/- is virtually impossible to find now, other than in very old boozers in ex-mining communities. I personally think it's a fantastic session beer, i.e. you can drink it until the cows come home with very little pain the next day. 8)

Thanks a lot for your input - I am going to try something very similar to what you recommended, except that I will use some hopped extract from a kit (probably stout/mild) as my base, only using half the can to keep the hop flavour and IBUs down, and then making up the OG with plain malt extract.

I'll reply again in a few weeks with the outcome, if anyone is interested...
