Medieval hangover

Well, the royalists had a day to celebrate on Friday. But I thought I'd celebrate on Saturday instead as I've no interest in royalty and the weather was better at the weekend.

So I settled down to a day in the garden quaffing my latest brew. It's my first stab at at an Abbot (GK) so my thoughts had obviously drifted towards Thomas Becket and things medieval. I was actually a bit wide of the mark as regards cloning the GK brew, but it was an excellent beer nonetheless, so I thought I'd post it. The name came to me while watching David Starkey (actually, there were two of him by this time) pontificating on the TV. It seemed to sum up the right royal treat we've been exposed to in the last few weeks and probably reflects the state my head will be in tomorrow morning.

The attraction of this beer is that it has the bite and drinkabilty of a bitter, suitable even for breakfast (hic), but also the strength and warmth needed for quaffing by the fire in the evening. In fact, it's an all around tasty brew that you can even drink from a wine glass as the flavour is full but mellow. It's somewhat sweet, but with a matching bitterness. I can imagine quaffing it from a medieval drinking vessel and tipping the mead into the shrubbery...

For 5.25 gall:

Malt (60 min mash):
4151g crushed Maris Otter pale malt
230g crushed amber malt (EBC 60)
230g crushed crystal malt (EBC 130)

Hops (90 minute boil):
90 minutes (bittering)
27g Challenger (7.6%)

15 minutes (flavour):
23g Fuggles (4.9%)

Nottingham yeast

You could try adding a few herbs for the authentic medieval taste.

Beautifully done Doctor. superb! I have something to say about drinking vessels....won't spoil your thread mate. Wood though. Yours looks a good thing. Mmmm. I did 'Thumper' tonight. smells like heaven here. Enjoying the wooden 'glasses' too. Will post elsewhere eventually.
