Which yeast should I use?

Post by BitterTed » Sun Oct 30, 2011 8:16 pm

I'm looking to brew some Batemans XXXB and was wondering what yeast (either WYeast or Whitelabs) you would suggest using? Being a yank I can't get some from the brewery, as much as I would like to. Any help would be appreciated!!
Cheers

Whitelabs WLP002 would be my choice,IMO that yeast is hard to beat for brewing English Ales.
I buy my grain & hops from here http://www.homebrewkent.co.uk/

I seem to recall Batemans' is a dual strain - have you thought of having a word with Brewlabs to see if they can rustle up 'something similar to Bateman's yeast'? I'm pretty certain they've sent slants/slopes to the states in the past.

Thanks for the responses!
Steve I had thought of Brewlab after my post, so I think I will send them an email and see what they have to say!
Thanks again!

When I did my clone variant I used Wyeast 1028. It came out real close apart from the high abv. I've amended the quantities for you below to adjust

Crystal Malt 130 EBC 1 lbs. 13.9 oz 850 grams 11.9%

Thanks!
Brewlab responded to my email, I simply asked which strain would get me close and they said they had several strains for that style and I should let them know if I wanted a slope! They must think I want a trade secret!!
