i want to make a 5-6% beer help

Post by alfie09 » Wed Nov 16, 2011 9:49 pm

hello all. i want to make a 5-6% beer with just goldings througout. and for malt it will be a bit of roasted barley, chocolate malt, torrified wheat, pale malt. i want if fairly dark but not stout "dark". i want to make 15 litres of this beer but i am not sure how the best to get the most flavour and some bitterness from just 100grams of goldings?. thinking i will need a good amount of bitterness in this strongish beer?

For that size batch one pack of goldings will be plenty.

Sounds like you need to download the beer engine....click on the calculators tab top right

Around 40 IBUs would be a good bet. I've started using Brew Mate instead of Beer Engine as it's more configurable, and for a 15 litre recipe, 50g at 60 mins, 20g at 10 mins and 20g at 2 mins comes out at just over 40 IBUs. That's assuming an Alpha Acid percentage of 4.1 for the Goldings. Should give you a good bitterness plus bags of flavour and aroma. :-) You can tinker with the Alpha values for the Goldings but unless they're wildly different you'll be OK to leave them as they are.
