What hops for my spring ale

Post by JamesH » Sun Feb 12, 2012 12:58 pm

Hello all,

I need help picking some hops for my Spring ale brew.

I will be having my first brew today and tomorrow after a break of almost a year. It will be a 4 gallon brew with a simple grain bill of just 3kg MO (220g of sugar thrown in the boil). I have 100g of each of the following hops:

Challenger
Fuggles
Hallertau
Bramling Cross

What would you recommend I use for this beer? I am having a little Spring ale competition with a friend so want it to be a bit special.

Thanks,

James.

Challenger for bittering.
Fuggles 2nd's
Steep the X and maybe dry hop with the rest of the Fuggles and X.
Had an unfortunate experience with the Hallertau so can't comment on it.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Sir, you are drunk! Yes madam, and you are ugly, but in the morning I shall be sober! - WSC

I'd throw him a curve and use the hallertau since it's usually associated with lager. It will be a nice surprize to find it in an ale.
What yeast are you going to use?
I'm just here for the beer.

Too late I'm afraid. I did the whole brew today. I went for Challenger then Fuggles. Using Muntons Gold for the yeast.

That's a good combo.
