recipe for St. Peters?

Post by jonnybeer » Tue May 22, 2007 7:31 am

Hi, I tried a bottle of St Peters bitter over the weekend. A very light coloured beer with a beautiful aroma and aftertaste. They are from Norfolk, an ex-monastry with their own spring water. Would love to have a go at that one. Has anyone tried to brew this and if so what were your results and have you a recipe please?

Their Cream Stout is superb from the bottle, heaven knows what it must be like on tap 8)

Having said that, I'm on a training course this week in Lambeth, a short tube journey away from the Jerusalem Tavern as owned by St Peters :-k

I tried their IPA about 2 weeks ago, and following a very long journey to get to my house...it was fantastic. I really enjoyed it. Their pale ale tastes a little too Burtony for me, the sulfates I think. But the IPA was great.

Steve, I stand corrected, you are right they are from suffolk. I managed to retrieve the bottle, it's 'golden ale' and it's sold in Waitrose. I'd love to be able to clone this, it's a seriosly good taste. Thanks.

From Normans Almanac.....

St Peters Extra St Peters Brewery co Bungay Suffolk
OG 1043 ABV 4.4% 25 litre batch.

HALCYON PALE MALT 3900 gms
CRYSTAL MALT 573 gm
ROAST BARLEY 113 gms This replaces roast malt stated by St Peters

HOPS boil time 90 minutes,EBU not given I have calculated for 28 EBU

CHALLENGER 40 gms
Add 10 gms goldings last 15 minutes.

Yeast is of your choosing.

Their website says the following for the Golden ale...
"English Pale malts coupled with Challenger and Goldings hops provide the bitterness and aroma. "

I would say for the golden ale you don't want the roast malt, and maybe even a bit less crystal.
Think summer ale with Challenger and Goldings really...

Thanks subsub, i'll be going with light crystal.
Thinks the the amount of crystal stated in the recipe will make it way to dark a beer.
Wondering if i'll still get somewhere near the taste and flavour from this change though as never used light crystal before.

Cheers J.B.
