Russian Imperial Stout recipe using Challenger Hops

Post by DC » Thu Jul 05, 2012 12:25 pm

Hi all, After completing my 1st brew day with my new 70L Thermopot Mashtun I am looking to brew a Russian Imperial Stout as I now have the extra space in my new mashtun to brew Stonger 5 gallon and 10 gallon batches. I have some Challenger hops left over from my last brewday and I was wanting to use these up in a Russian Imperial Stout recipe if possible without having to order another 2 or 3 lots of hops online to have loads left over. I already have the pale malt supplied by my local brewery and will have to order the speciality grains online. Just wondering if anyone knows of a RIS recipe using Challenger Hops :?: and would they work okay in a RIS or not :?:

Cheers DC

As far as I'm concerned a good RIS is about the malts and the alcohol warmth, hops are purely for bittering so I can't see anything wrong with Challenger. There are a few that go with later hop additions but you'll probably be ageing it for so long that most of the aroma and flavour will be lost to the malts in the end. Go for it! :D

Challenger is such a great all round hop, I reckon it would make a lovely RIS.

After aging for at least a year, I doubt ur gonna notice any distinct hops in there even if u have 10mins and flame out additions

My RIS recipe calls for target hops, but I wouldn't hesitate to brew it with challenger if that's what I had on hand.
I'm just here for the beer.

I just go with the highest AA hop I can find and put less in than I would with a lower AA hop.
